Cultural Invasion Or Diffusion?
Posted 9/27/14
I was watching Law and Order: SVU when, all of a sudden, a commercial for Microsoft something or other comes on...

And the song they used is...

K-Pop? In America? On a grand scale? I'll be damned.

Granted, 2NE1 is absolutely hugely popular worldwide, but this...This is big.

Outbreak Company handled this best. Cultures can meet and be one. I think this is great. I'm glad this stuff is finding a market here in the US.

Diffusion involves the movement from higher concentration to lower concentration, since the US has a larger population than South Korea, the song is actually moving from a lower concentration to a higher concentration in terms of population, so the correct term would be Cultural Active Transport. If it were American culture to South Korea then it would be Cultural Diffusion

Hm? Lookin at it another way, America has a lower concentration of Korean culture and so Korean culture is spilling over. Interesting to use biology/chemistry terms though.

But Diffusion doesn't require ATP(energy) while Active Transport does and I'm guessing it takes a lot more work and energy for Korean culture to move to America than American culture moving to Korea

It's def not cultural invasion.

In Australia, we have a channel (SBS) which has a program dedicated to Kpop latest music videos. This is the only channel that is truly "multicultural", with films/programs from all over the world, and not just American imports or TV shows with just White people...

I think AiYumega is having mixed thoughts on the definition of Invasion and Diffusion, but he asked so..

No, I think Diffusion in today's society is amazing, I'm hoping to see more as it comes up. But invasion? Asia isn't invading anyone, and that's a statement. Because they are so world-wide known it gives them the leverage in being special, you're not invading when your song is being used for sponsoring something. I'm sure you mean no harm but I'm suggesting the change of words in your vocab.
