First of all, if you're one of those TL;DR people just gtfo because I'm not gonna write a TL;DR version.

I want to make it clear that I am Danish so as you can probably imagine, as a 10 year old kid, a lot of the stuff from the story just went straight over my head the first time I played MGS2 (which was my first mgs game)
Imagine playing a game in Japanese as a 10 year old kid, and you should have a pretty good idea of how bad it was.

I still to this day have no idea how I managed to complete games like MGS2 and Final Fantasy 8 and 9 without knowing English, but I digress.

I've been on a MGS craze lately, it all started when I purchased the HD collection from the store because it was on sale and I have been playing the games ever since.
First MGS2, then MGS3 and I just had to go ahead and purchase the classic MGS for the sake of getting into the lore.
Holy crap that game is hard compared to any instalment following the first one by the way.

I was genuinly surprised by how solid (no pun intended) the series really is and having played the entire series consecutively, I now understand what it is I love so much about the series.
First of all I absolutely adore how much Kojima he leaves us with, never trying to keep it simple and always expecting of us fans to keep with the story so things don't have to be repeated more than necessary.
Obviously Kojima must be a huge fan of conspiracy theories as well, his games are littered with them after all, and there's no denying that they resemble real world history very closely (give it or take a cyborg ninja or two)

What is it that you enjoy the most about the series as a fan?
Is it the quirks? the over-the-top bossfights? or maybe the highly prolific characters?

MGS2

MGS3

MGS: Portable Ops

MGS: Peace Walker

Metal Gear Solid

MGS4

Feel free to share your story and or opinion on any or all of the mgs games you played.
I've made this thread to discuss metal gear with other fans after all.

Finally I want to cover the story/timeline for those who has yet to play all of the games.

Metal Gear Solid 3:Snake Eater - 1964

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops - 1970

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker - 1974

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes - quoted as "taking place soon after the events of Peace Walker" 1975-1976-ish?

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain - Quoted as "Taking place after Ground Zeroes" most likely directly after.

Metal Gear - 1995 (this one's for the NES or Famicom in case you have not heard of it, I don't blame you)

Solid Snake - 1999 (Sequel to the NES/Famicom game, both games are summarized in reports in the PS1 Metal Gear Solid under "special")

Metal Gear Solid - 2005

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty - 2007

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - 2014

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance - 2018 <-- yes this instalment is canonicial.

As for Metal Gear Solid Ac!d 1 and 2, they are not canoncial so there :0) that about covers the timeline.

Kojima states that The Phantom Pain will be his last MGS game, but he said the same thing for MGS4.
Then again, if he manages to connect Big Boss with Les Enfants Terribles the entire series has basically been connected so in a sense it could in fact very well be his last game.

Personally I suspect Kojima might actually go through with that statement.
As for content I suppose you could make a spin-off game where you play as The Boss or a sequel to Revengeance.
I'd like to see a spin-off game based on the boss, and revengeance was a good game, but I don't particularly have any desire to see a sequel for that game.

I just love the story. I love conspiracy theories, about what the government does, that the general public doesn't know about. It can get a little complicated at times to understand what's going on. I remember I would spend a lot of time replaying these games, just so I can watch all the cutscenes. I didn't care that they could be 30+ minutes long. Of course, the characters are memorable, the stealth aspect is always nice. Especially now compared to the FPS that are out there.

I play the games for the story as well.

Which one is your favorite?

If I had to choose. I would have to chose MGS for the PS1. Could be nostalgia, but just how that game was, when it released was great. I just love how you could fight Psycho Mantis, by putting your controller into controller port 2, and beat him that way. How they made you look at the back of the CD case, to find Meryls codec number. Which in honesty, took me a couple of days, to figure that one out.

MGSV: Phantom Pain - 1984.

MGS series is one of my most favorite series. My ranking is as follows:

1. MGS3
2. MGS: Peace Walker
3. MGS4
<Ac!d2>
4. MGS
5. MGR: Revengeance
6. MGS2
<Ac!d>
7. MPO (and MPO+)
8. MG2
9. MG

I haven't played GZ but will when MGSV draws closer. I too play for the story. Big Boss being my favorite character, I'm really looking forward to what happens to him and MSF in V.

Haha this one caused me quite a bit of frustration since I bought it digitally from the PSN, I had to go down the unsavory path of looking it up online.

From what I've seen and heard, GZ isn't even worth purchasing...
You get a hold of a dying Paz and a damaged Chico and that is all.
By the way what do you guys think of Kojima's choice of replacing Hayter with Sutherland?
I can see what he means when he says he wants to try something in a new direction, my issue with the whole ordeal is that it's a choice that should've been made back in MGS3: Snake Eater, now it just sort of alienates me from the character, but we'll have to see.

Also, David Hayter states he won't be playing MGS Phantom Pain haha.
I don't blame the guy, must've felt like a suckerpunch when he didn't even realize what was going on by the time they made the call of replacing him.

My favorite was MGS3: Snake Eater. To me it was the most interesting, during the Cold War, and the story wasn't as confusing & convoluted.

I will never consider MGS Revengeance to be part of the story since it doesn't play a huge roll in the main story and if you haven't played it then don't read the spoiler

Edit: My favorite of the series is MGS4 because it answered all my questions about everything on the Patriots and everything else! As for the aspect of a video game would be MGS3 and MGS.

Yeah. GZ was just Kojima's way of testing his new approach to MGS. To see what he has to change to make Phantom Pain perfect. Even with the short story it has, I'm still playing it.

As for Hayter, I think Kojima was right to replace him. Hayter would have made him sound younger. It makes the slightly older Big Boss his own character. From what I've heard in the trailers so far, Sutherland sounds alright.

One theory I had for the change was because of the end of MGS4 before Snake almost took his life Big Boss came and told to just live a normal life and it would have been awkward as hell to have Hayter just talk to himself in that part of the game but it would make sense because Big Boss is old now so old that he died but shows he has matured as for Snake still sounding young is because he has FOXDIE wich made him look older faster but as you can see his body was trying to be his real age giving him still a fit but old body and young voice It only makes sence tohave Big Boss in MGS GZ and Phantom Pain sound older since he is aging normally

Exactly. Thanks for elaborating on what I was too lazy to type.

It's sad that people say they won't play PP just because Hayter isn't in it.

I think most of them are full of shit to be honest.
The choice caught them by surprise and they resort to angry messages on the internet because they don't know what to make of the situation instead of just trying to look at it from a logical standpoint like you guys were saying.

I'm willing to bet that most of the angry people on the internet will be buying the phantom pain regardless of how they reacted when they heard the news and their statement lol.

David Hayter on the other hand made it very clear in an interview that he won't be playing it though.
Again, can't say that I blame him, the guy has been around for literally every game, reprising his role as either big boss or solid snake.
He probably feels robbed of his legacy as this character.

Honestly, I love Hayter's voice, and even though I would prefer having him voice Big Boss. I'm totally fine with having a different voice actor voicing Big Boss. Mainly because it is a different person after all, and it makes sense, to have a different voice actor. Granted I'm not sure if you do clone someone, if they would have the same voice or not.

I agree. It makes sense.
Not gonna start an argument on the effect of a subjects voice and how equal it may be to their clone counterpart lol.
I just wish they would have done this way back with the release of MGS3, that way Hayter wouldn't have been pissed all over either.

I'm still somewhat expecting a MSS4-like credits moment where they list a character's voice that had yet to appear in the game and they cut out of the credits into a cut-scene.

Before Sutherland was announced there were a couple of playful tweets (that didn't seem to fit in with the malice afterwards) from Hayter that read:

"I'm so excited for E3!

I just hope I don't lose my voice.

;-)"

"Uh oh,

I think I feel laryngitis coming on"

and afterwards there was this bit

"Ah well,

Can't fault @RealKiefer

Great actor. good man. The game will probably still be excellent.

Like New Coke!"

(at this point you can google the "New Coke" conspiracy theories)
