If there's a thread like this then please lock & close!

Do you want anime to become mainstream?

Here's some food for thought;

At the moment the mainstream population looks upon anime as a weird and/or perverted form of entertainment. The mainstream population don't see anime as the art form it truly is nor how dark a anime like when they cry can be... Then we also have the fact that anime's biggest income is series and that means that TV channels would've to broadcast anime if it became mainstream. And that would mean that we wouldn't see things like Steins;Gate in mainstream TV, the time travel aspects would sell on some networks not just as a animation... And even if that happened then they would have to tone down the violence.

If you look at humanity as a whole then you see a LOT of idiots out there who just likes something because people they know also happened to like that thing. I for one would not like to have these types of people in the anime fandom.

Anyways, what's your take on anime becoming mainstream?

Anime isn't mainstream.

I am going to have to agree here anime isn't main stream. They only show it on a few cable channels once or twice a week and its always late at night. I would love for it to go mainstream though, ever since digimon was on Saturday mornings o so long ago I wished it would

Do people even know what time slots most anime air in Japan?

It will always be a niche thing. The culture keeps it down with misinformation and mindless bashing. Imagine the influx of versus threads when anime is readily acceptable and everyone thinks their favorite show is the best. Think of all the hipsters that like a show that is rated a constant 5/10 or less and how smug they could get if you like anything higher than 7.

Not that it doesn't already happen, but I prefer anime to be looked down on than what it would be. Think of all the violence between "True Otaku" and "New-Born Otaku" and those face palming at people calling themselves otaku.

I feel in Finland it's very much under a rock. Would be nice if it became more mainstream thing, outside internet I have 0 people to talk about it. While I think some of my friends doesn't really have opinions about it, some seem to think it's just kids stuff or hentai lol

It's definitely mainstream. I have the Anime Network on TV, Cartoon Network has anime. The radio is a dead medium but even then they wouldn't talk about anime on the radio.

Anime is absolutely mainstream now. Teenaged girls watch anime to be "kawaii" and Tumblr is full of anime gifs and posts. Everytime I go to Barnes And Noble, the manga section is full of people reading and some talking about what manga is. Lots of people just curious as to what it is.

Everyone knows what anime is, and everyone knows about at least one. Pokemon, DBZ, Yu-Gi-Oh. They know it.

Attack On Titan took off big time, especially on Netflix.

You have videos on YouTube with "Teens react to Attack On Titan" and they already had a general idea of what anime was, and some even said they watched it.

My own mother knows what anime is.

Is the mainstream totally accepting of it? No. But it's there. It's popular now, like comic books, and science fiction. Will it stay? I don't know. But I definitely see it on a mainstream level now.

It's more widespread than it used to be, if anything else.

Anime will never be mainstream in its Japanese form. English Dubs become quite popular over time such as AOT and DBZ, But yeah neither will ever be extremely mainstream just because its classed for kids by many

I'd rather it not be mainstream (it's fairly close in the US), but I would like it to not be stigmatized.

I'd rather anime remain the way it is now than seeing it all "westernized". Right now it's somewhere in the middle between mainstream and not, and i think that suits anime perfectly.

Just because a few channels have it doesn't make it mainstream.

Also, the only time when a anime (not anime as a whole) get's accepted is when 4kids or some other company decides to give the kids stuff a dub.

I definitely don't want it mainstream. America will mess it all up somehow if anime became mainstream. So, I want it to stay how it is.
