Make sure you know at least basic Japanese

Try to meet Japanese friends where you are studying since they will be more open to chatting to foreign students on campus. Having Japanese friends is the secret to growing a social life in Japan where people are introduced over just randomly talking to each other.,

Get a phone with a Japanese company! This is the other secret to a social life. You will also be able to sign up to Japanese services with a Japanese phone such as Mixi and so on that can be a cool way to meet people and find out about events in your area. You can rent a phone from many places i recommend this if you're only there for 10 months.

Convenience stores in Japan are very convenient! You can do just about anything in them from paying bills, picking up manga anthologies to picking up concert tickets. Many are also open 24 hours so there is always a place to go for a midnight snack.

Despite popular belief you don't have to apologize so much for every little thing. Most people find it annoying when westerners overuse apologies XD.

Don't talk on public transport, always stand if you are a man so elderly and women can sit, Don't talk on the phone or make a noise with it either.

Stay away from Roppongi it's a tourist trap.

Book-Off is awesome also get used to renting since buying anime is incredibly expensive in Japan.

Nah, they'd deny it anyways. Pointless.

make sure when at certain noodle places you ask for the noodles to be hot....... or youll get cold noodles.... you might light them.... I did not........

you will need help with navigating the underground rail system , ask for help people are generally helpful.... I got lost a group of school girls helped me

( i met up with up with them the next day we had lunch together and I gave them some English sweets which I purposely brought with me for situations like that haha)

Just got back from japan a little while ago actually my biggest thing while you're over there is find an izakaya that you like and make friends with some of the locals. They'll be able to show you around and get you to the little known spots around the country. If you happen to stop in Hatchyobori for any reason go check out my friends at Shiroiyuki right across the street from the APA Hotel Hatchyobori - Eki - Minami tell them Mike from NY says hi!

Wasn't there a rule about not asking personal questions/advice questions? <.<!

Though, hope you had a good time, I was there for 14 days in July and it was amazing :D! Though you really have to be prepared for them not knowing English, I was lucky enough to have memorized some key Japanese words for when there was someone who didn't understand what I said, haha, though it was often misunderstood xD Fun times :DD *then we proceeded to give hand signs and point at stuff we meant XD* (this all happened once in a maid cafe, it was the best ! We even got an Japanese menu and didn't know anything that was written, we just pointed at something haha! I got a rice omelet and the maid drew a bunny on the omelet with ketchup <3)

Umm went off track..hurr, hope you are having a fun time :D!
