How screwed would you be without subtitles in anime?

I'd be okay, but fairly unhappy until I make a guessing game out of it, like I did when I watched Spirited Away for the first time, in the raw. I'd just depend on the visuals, vocal tones, and atmosphere for context clues. I only know a few Japanese words and phrases, but I'm alright with filling in the blanks when I have to.

You mentioned "Crunchyroll" in this post. What if I went to another website to watch subbed anime? I'll continue watching English dubs, regardless.

I would probably understand like half of the things they say but I"d still be screwed without subs

Think I could understand about 90% -random number- of most Anime (have tried some raws when waiting for subs causes much suffering, and came up with that number as a guess), but if it was an Anime full of deep/smart dialogue, which are my second favorite type(after Cute Girls Doing Cute Things), pretty sure I'd be dead. Would still try tho.
Never tried studying Japanese dialogue much, but have studied a bit of kanji whenever they get in my way when reading raw doujins on pixiv.

Raws/No-subs > Subs > Dubs

If no subs, I'd go to raws(which are superior, but I'll take subs as a life-saver). If no raws either, then no choice but watch dubbed. (Still waiting for the day I can find a way to watch the first 3 Pokemon gens in Japanese)

I'd maybe know 40% of the phrases and that's only because I'm a huge weeb. Other than that, I only know the common ones.

I only know buzz-words such as 'kawaii', 'onee-chan', 'arigatou', etc... Definitely no where near enough to know what they're actually saying though.

I'd be able to pick up the gist most of the time, but my vocabulary is only so big at this point. I'd get lost frequently.

I watch everything with subs, even western movies or shows in English. It's not because I don't speak English well, it's just because sometimes my brain lets a few sentences slip every so often because I was focusing more on looking at the image than listening to what they said. Sometimes when I'm watching a movie in English without subtitles I find myself to be confused or lost later on. But if I watch with subs, I concentrate on the subtitles and I take in 100% of what they're saying. I guess I'm just more visual.

So even if I did understand Japanese, I would watch with subs. And it's another reason for me to dislike dubbed anime.

Well yeah that's the loophole here. But since we're on Crunchyroll, that's why I used it.

Ah ha! Looks like I'll be watching subbed anime elsewhere.

I used to watch a lot of raw foreign shows as a kid and not care. I'd be somewhat lost though.
