How screwed would you be without subtitles in anime?

Lol, I couldn't imagine watching something like Monogatari without subs.

I'd end up thinking it's just a long winded series where the MC tries to pursue his harem while occasionally assaulting lolis. (It is kind of what it is about but still).

Oh VERY screwed up!! I like watching both as long as the anime is worth watching.

I would do terribly. But for those who can't keep up reading subs, the subs are the least of their problems. They need to learn to read at a faster level.

Maybe I would be very screwed? I could only understand some basic conversations and get an idea. if it was based on a manga then I could know what is going on and what they are saying.

Royally

I don't speak a lick of Japanese, so I wouldn't really understand anything. I might be able to pick out a word here or there, but to actually understand a sentence is far beyond me.

Not that it really matters to me since I don't have a strong desire to learn Japanese anyway. Though I suppose that might sound odd to some lol

I am fairly new to learning Japanese and it would depend on the anime. If I were watching Naruto then it would be about 65-75 percent but if it were something like Love Live School Idol Project then it would be 10-20 percent. (I am learning Japanese through the Japanese Through Anime program which uses mainly Naruto as a base for vocabulary)

Would be interesting to say the least. I know basic Japanese and would pick up on most things from context, but if it is verbose I can forget about understanding everything. Slice of life shows would not change though, those are very easy to pick up on without subs.

I've been watching anime for 10 years now (all subbed with the exception of a few titles). The only Japanese I've formally learnt in the past has been numbers, the family tree (relatives), honorifics and Hiragana.

Regardless, if I look away from my screen for a minute, just like OP, I can understand a majority of what has been said - perhaps not 90% like OP, but roughly 75%.

Considering I tend to watch dialogue heavy shows and know only a few words of Japanese, I'd be very screwed. I'd basically be limited to Tom and Jerry style shows where dialogue is rare and doesn't really matter.

Yeah I agree! Haha that pretty much what it is, and I probably would come to the same conclusion. Some trippy supernatural harem wherein fanservice is perspective. Maybe one day I shall have the ear to comprehend all that is Monogatari without subtitles. One day being many years!

I'd suck at it for a while but I know I'd watch enough and study enough that I might actually be able to speak reasonably good Japanese....

after a while...
