I've noticed when I've watched anime that most main characters are always boys. If a girl does end up being the main character it never ends up being fancy. Do you think there is preference of men over girls in Anime? Could someone like Naruto or Ichigo have been a woman instead of a boy?

Would you agree that woman in anime are always represented as being lewd and only used as a tool for sexual attraction to please the fan base? And I am aware of things like Yaoi, but please ignore that.

are woman portrayed fairly?

You haven't watched enough anime if you think that women are only portrayed as lewd and/or a sexual tool. I would say that more than 50% of anime has female main characters. Even more so if you include romance into the mix. A good modern example that breaks all your points is magi madoka. Really if you haven't watched that yet, you should. It's great.

With that in mind, you have to remember that anime is targeted at men. There is going to be fanservice in some anime. Whether or not that anime is good depends on how they use said fanservice. It can be done in a way that doesn't harm the story or degrade the characters. Strike the blood is an example of how not to use fanservice. They do indeed degrade the female characters in that one. There are also anime that have manservice, although these are still about 1/6 at best.

In the end, some anime can degrade women but for the most part that is not the case. Perhaps you are picking all the wrong shows to watch, this anime season have been very light on fanservice.

But generally, the amount of female characters is unequal to the amount of male characters. Naruto is a prime example, take a look at most posters of it and count the difference.

you make a valid point. Perhaps it's what I'm watching. Shonen,Shoujo (harems and stuff) is usually what I'm watching. I mean I do always keep up with the latest seasonal anime's as of 2011 when I started watching anime for real. But even some romantic anime's that I've seen have lewd content in it, but then again you're right. Anime is mostly targeted with men in mind.

I'm in no way going to defend series that demean women, because they definitely do exist. Most harem shows can be quite bad. The only recent harem that I've watched that didn't do that was nisekoi.

On the flip side of that, you can find many romances that have no fanservice at all. Kimi ni todoke, one week friends, ect.

In the end, if the fanservice of the show you're watching is that bad, you can always drop it. Chances are it's not very good and will not be remembered for much more than the season it aired in (kill la kill is one exception, although it's fanservice is quite controversial).

I always wondered will people still enjoy their favorite shounen anime, if the male main character was a girl.

Have you guys met Erena Jaeger?

It boils down to perspective, and what you choose to watch. I feel like girls get just as much fanservice as guys do in modern anime, so I'm completely fine with what the guys get in their shows, because I get equally as neat stuff, like NEVER ENDING WAVES OF SHOUJO ANIME.

I don't know if I'd say that women in anime are only used for fanservice, but it's definitely pretty prevalent. I don't think that's an anime-only issue, though; women in media are often put into roles that seem to be there only for the male gaze or for furthering a romantic subplot. Still, there are a lot of anime out there that portray women in ways that pass the Bechdel test, or that allow them to have more agency. It really depends on the genre, and all that.

But yeah, like evernessince said, if the fanservice is bad, you can drop it. I think that as long as there are fans of series with huge amounts of fanservice, there will continue to be series made with huge amounts of fanservice. If you don't like it, don't support it. There are a ton of good shows that don't rely on fanservice, but still have some fanservice-y moments, and there are a ton of good shows with little to no fanservice whatsoever.

We can't use Ranma 1/2 in this, can we? I don't know if s/he qualifies as a female, well at least half the time.

I wouldn't be opposed to Mikasa being the main protagonist of AoT. I like her way more than Eren, abs and all.

Mikasa would do good as a main character. She'll no longer be overprotective of Eren and can do things her way.

are men portrayed fairly?

Most are incompetent and act like bumbling twats around women
all of them are perverted
often depicted as gorgeous sex bombs with perfect bodies
the main character types are often way to fantastical to be considered realistic

Oh wait... ITS FANTASY

Women in anime
~often gorgeous just like the men (because no one wants to watch ugly characters do stuff for 20 minutes, we all want to be aesthetically pleased)
~Big breasted
~often the character that needs saving

Both genders are represented unfairly, and the thing is.. it doesn't matter. Its a work of fiction depicting fictional characters doing fictional things. It doesn't need to be politically correct.

However, i do take a strong stance against shows like Highschool of the dead, which i honest to god believe, would have been a fantastic show if the characters had as much personality as the jello breasts.

Men are represented unfairly just like women are in anime.

If you dont like it, make your own anime.

There are alot of shows that flip the current problems plaguing anime on its head and whips its incompetent little rear-end.
Shows like, Zankyou no terror(no fan-service what so ever and was a Shakespearean masterpiece), Witch craft works (which reversed the damsel in distress role and was quite well done) and blood C/ blood +.

no one is represented unfairly in "anime" as a whole, they are represented unfairly in particular shows.

I would love to see more of strong female lead character in an action based animes. Take Black Lagoon for instant. Revy had the body of a porn actress but there was hardly any focus on that. She had character and wasn't the type of princess needing rescue.
If anyone know of any good animes with strong female lead characters hit me up.
