StateAlchemistAlex And I am aware of things like Yaoi, but please ignore that.

So by that you meant "I am aware there is anime that does the exact same to the opposite gender but please ignore that"

Seriously?

sorry, I did not mean it that way, I just strictly wanted to compare the female and male gender

I always wondered will people still enjoy their favorite shounen anime, if the male main character was a girl.

Have you guy met Erena Jaeger?

Exactly. I would still watch it though. I can't be so sure about everybody else.

depends on the formula being followed. A lot of the Harem formulas call for skirt flips, bath scenes, falling down scenes, etc.... to reel in an audience of teenage boys.

but a show using a different core formula relies on different things. Attack on Titan was mentioned. Not counting fan art, do you think the female characters of that series depicted poorly? Sure Mikasa isn't the Main Character but is she depicted as an object of lust for the men of the show?

The Fate series. This series originates from an erotic novel game, but would you say that Saber's depiction in the anime is demeaning to the character?

One series that just started is Terraformars. The female characters in that series are certainly attractive women, but they are also incredible fighters (just wait till you see Michelle in a fight, she is freaking fantastic)

There's Yaoi that's made in a way to please girls, and then there's Yuri made to please boys. Just like there's Harem and Reverse-Harem, or Seinen and Shoujo. I just think men and women are pretty equal in anime and manga right now, and I like it the way it is

I couldn't find the post someone else made, but young girls in anime are usually exploited for their potential fans. It is a bit saddening to see.

Even in my favorites there is a show that I thought portrayed a group of three friends (1 boy 2 girls) in a love triangle splendidly. It didn't stop them from ruining touching moments with an upskirt --- LIKE WHAT THE H---?!!?!?!? I won't go into Code Geass putting girls in compromising positions - sure it happened, but often (first season at least) --- it related with the story and not a random pantsu shot (except the chosen angle in Knightmares...).

As for girl vs boy main characters ----
The wonderful world of manga has plenty of great female lead characters. The problem with animating them is that why take a show where the majority just won't relate to, or..., Feel titillated by when they can animate a story that both sexes can watch? I never understood it. People praise strong female main characters, but they'll still retreat to their half naked damsels in distress. I know plenty of people loved Asuna in the first half of SAO and then they didn't care if she was reduced to being helpless because she is Asuna...

qualeshia3Mikasa would do good as a main character. She'll no longer be overprotective of Eren and can do things her way.

Considering Eren is the main reason why I'm almost physically unable to watch Attack on Titan, that would have made ME more likely to be a fan that's for sure.

AoT would have been amazing with Mikasa, as unlike Eren she's not automatically making everything about her when she's on screen.

Now people, remember that some criticism of some trends in media is not the same as saying some media sucks or that people who enjoy works with some problematic elements are bad people. That should go without saying, but I'll state it to make sure people don't misunderstand: I love anime enough to pay crunchyroll to get my fix, but that doesn't mean even my favourite shows don't have some problematic elements to them.

Good news: Anime isn't really any worse than other media regarding sexism. As noted uptread there's actually a lot of anime material aimed at girls and even boy's shows will sometimes have strong female characters.

Bad news: Anime isn't any better than other media regarding sexism. It's not just the fanservice, it's the often sexualised violence towards women and the tendency to have only male characters have actual agency. It's not universal, but it's certainly VERY common, especially in the more popular stuff.

Think about it;: in wich show outside of Attack on Titan do you see female soldiers in sensible combat clothes? Heck in wich show outside Attack on Titan do you see women who don't wear skirts?

Well i guess the only anime i felt like that was Katekayo hitman reborn. I mean the female leads are always doing cooking and washing dishes. Pretty much nothing else. But i guess it's fine since it is a shounen anime.

Eren makes me angry and annoyed the hell out of me. Mikasa wouldn't annoy me if she hadn't been so overprotective of Eren and having feeling for the idiot. The anime will do fine with just her and Armin as the main characters. Armin has the smarts and Mikasa has the muscle.
