What you really need is a giant robot, right, but you have to make sure you buy quality - no settling for some overpriced nonsense that doesn't even feature combining or rocket punches!

Start putting together a Blu-ray/DVD collection of your favorite anime.

However buy a bookshelf or two first as you will end up running out of places to put your anime and manga. trust me. I desperately need to get myself a bookshelf as my tv stand is running out of room for my anime and my night stand is running out of room for my manga( I have manga and other books on my night stand)

I agree with Galaxiias on the t-shirts. Blu-Ray/DVD, manga, figurines, etc. are all common otaku trappings, but they tend to only be things you keep at your house in a private collection and other people only see them when they come over. To really show the world you are an otaku, you need proper attire and accessories. Think t-shirts, hats, can badges, messenger bags, and maybe even jewelry (if you wear any men's jewelry). These all show the world that you are a proud otaku and you can take them anywhere. If you happen to make it to Japan for a visit, your attire can also help start conversations if you are in an area with a high concentration of otaku . . . yes, I'm talking about you, Akiba and Den-Den Town! And on that subject, Don Quixote (Donki) and Village Vanguard shops in Japan are good places to get some cheap otaku swag, but to get the really obscure stuff you usually need to go to an anime specialty goods store.

I wouldn't worry too much about where to start...just jump in. Eventually you'll own a little of everything; T-Shirts, Anime, Manga, Art Books, Visual Novels, etc. I would only recommend getting something from your favorite (or one of your favorite) anime/manga. The first thing I got was Yu-Yu-Hakusho on DVD...2 years later and maybe up to $2k later I have a "healthy" addiction. xD

Instead of the poster route you can get anywhere from 500 to 2000 piece puzzles in awesome poster dimensions of any anime you like. Not only do actually get a sense of accomplishment from doing it but they usually come with glue so you can frame it and hang it up. Baller status!

Figures can run you up several hundred dollars. At least for figures of good quality.
So while you don't have a permanent income, I suggest you invest in posters, DVD's and other less expensive items.

Something less expensive is the way to go. Nice plan of strategy.

^ Great wisdom in your observation, wonkywilla. I used to possess great resistance to anime and game (never was a gamer) figures until April, 2012. I finally capitulated and now have over 800 (not the nendos or deforms, either) downstairs in my basement area (away from direct sunlight and the consternation of my wife). AmiAmi and Big In Japan are my current goto Japanese sites (as well as a few others) plus YAJ for the Ichiban Kuji lottery (not sold in stores) figures.
