when are you considered dead?

One would think its an easy answer but it seems its not. i recently watched a fifth estate episode(Canadian investigative news) where they ask when you are medically considered dead. For those who do not know there are two ways you can be considered dead, Brain death when all brain function stops, and heart death when your heart stops.

Now of course people have all heard the stories of people having "died" and been brought back usually after there heart stops for a certain amount of time and then begins pumping again after being resuscitated. Sometimes they are brought back just as they where or in other cases if the heart stops for an extended amount of time it can lead to brain damage. Now the reason this is important is because in many different places the point when we are deemed dead as a doorknob varies, in some cases greatly from place to place. And in Canada even province to province or even hospital to hospital how long it takes until we are dead considered dead can be anywhere from 60 seconds to 5 minutes.

Beyond the major swings of time it takes for us to be considered dead the way in witch we measure our deadness varies as well. some use heart death some brain death some both. and the most important part of this has to do around organ donation, since an organ only remains viable after a certain amount of time after death. Meaning the shorter the wait to be sure of death the easier it is to extract and transplant the organs.

In Canada there is no federally mandated way to measure death. But it begs the question, When are you dead? when your brain stops? when your heart stops? and how long should you wait after you flat line to be considered dead?

I personally think brain death is a better way to measure death than how long after your heart stops. And i would rather the docs take the extra time to make sure i am really dead before they hack me up for bits. i mean it would be creepy to think maybe i was not totally dead when they started cutting me up?

What are your thoughts CR?

Update: here is the link to the article/video for those interested.

I think brain death is the one that should be measured, actually.

I don't know if there's a reliable way to measure it, generally it would be when you've reached a point that resuscitation isn't possible. As technology advances, that point can become further along. It'd be interesting if we invented technology to re-build a person from a few surviving cells and have them still be the same person, then you might still be "alive" after being blown to pieces.

I think the spiritual aspects are quite interesting too. If we have a "soul" that doesn't die with the body, when does it leave? If we spend an hour seemingly dead but somehow come back to life would we still have our soul? Maybe when you die you just "stop" but you might spend some time unconscious or partly conscious before the very end.

When resuscitation fails to start someone's heart back up I'd say that's when they should be considered dead.

I'd agree on brain death being the accurate way of determining if someone is genuinely dead. If the brain goes, everything goes with it.

I guess when your brain dead, since all your functions connect with it. Also, if your heart stops, you can quickly inject a drug to revive them.

I'd say a good time to ENSURE One is fully Dead...not Comatose....not suffering from a "Critical traumatic loss of Brain function" or "Persistent vegetative state"...and also not in some kind of "Hysterical-Expiration"...A good 2-3 Hours after One loses His or Her Oxygenation via Circulation by Your no longer functioning series of chambers called "Ventricles" within the Heart; There are 2 of them, and they are used to continue pumping and encircling Our "Circulatory system" with rich, GOOD lipid filled, Oxygenated Blood. After 2-3 Hours, Your Blood already has begun seeping from the areas in which it Used to stay, continuing thus to give You Life. So now, at this point, it begins to pool. Once Your Blood is pooled, and You can see the "Livor mortis" in the Corpse; That term is simply given to being able to clearly see the deep Dark reddening that Occurs in whichever areas of the Body the Person perishes lying against, or putting pressure upon...So when You observe that within a Corpse...Well, that's exactly what You are.

Other matters, Physicians will say, as SOON; the INSTANT as that Stem of Your Brain is severed...Though You may be nice and Warm for another couple Hours, You're expired. Toe tag Yah'. Or, in Cardiology, a situation within the "Inferior vena cava", in which there is a sudden, extremely traumatic and Fatal rupture...A PUSH of Blood from the relatively thin, yet highly important "Superior epigastric vein" which acts as a shunt to it's particular side of the Ventricle. Again, there are 2 of these. Each on opposing sides of Your Body, yet STILL kinda in the same area. This catastrophic push of Blood will then enter through to Your Body's "Inner thoracic Cavity". This is the area which houses Your Lungs, Your "Vagus nerve"...Your know when Your Pass out, or lose Consciousness; Fainting? Heh, the proper Medical terminology is called a "Vasovagal syncope". Your upper Intestinal and Digestive system is housed here, along with the Body's "Endocrine system", and finally Your "Diaphragm"...The part of the Body which facilitates the Lungs filling and passing Oxygen. AS WELL, as keeping the Heart and Cardiac "goodies" pressurized. So when that Blood comes rushing in there, Holy Moly. You Die from a LOT of different things happening simultaneously. Essentially, You drown in Your Own Blood. Some may say well this would take at least a couple minutes for the Circulatory to internally "exsanguinate", or bleed Out. However, the push is SO SUDDEN, and those linings of Your Ventricles are thinner than You may care to want to spend time pondering! It INSTANTLY tears a hole in the Vein or Artery shutting off the Heart's "Power factory" You can say. And You collapse fully, within 10-25 seconds. Oh and MAN...If ESPECIALLY You had, just about the absolute WORST CASE Cardiac occurrence...An "Aortic rupture", You're literally here Standing fine One minute, and the next Second, You're BROUGHT down, HARD. Liken it to getting Shot and forcefully going to the ground. The pressure of that which Our Blood pumps in this, Our Body's LARGEST Artery, It's like a Water pressure Jet. And it literally PUNCTURES a RIP; a TEAR, through that "Aortic wall"...Wherever that tear may occur....That's Something those with "Atherosclerosis" often have happen. The Heart, as with all Other Organs are supposed to remain slick; Pink, and slimy. With "ASVD"...Your Heart, and it's linings turn into that of...Picture a Ribeye steak that has been left Out in the Hot Sun with Insects eating their fill...Over a period of a couple Days. The lining just becomes reminiscent of an old Rotten Steak...Calcified with Plaque, and it has the texture of that of a crusty...Fibrous...Just disgusting looking manner. I've seen some so bad they made an audible SNAP when bent, or slanted. Cracking literally into fibrous, crystallized pieces. So watch Your Cholesterol...Limit the Fats, DON'T SMOKE...(Psshhttt...like I'm ANYONE to tell Another to stop Smoking...Terrible Habit; I hate it)...and practice a Healthy Lifestyle! Because unfortunately, If You get it...Your prognosis is not even Bad...There's a 98%chance that will be what takes You. You HAVE NO prognosis, terribly.

I Hope that this was enlightening, perhaps at the very least, coming from a Medical standpoint of View.

Oh and by the way...2-3 Hours is the absolute maximum length an Organ such as a Kidney, or Liver can be Outside of a Body...Not in Use, before It's completely cellulitically Dead as well. A Heart can only be Outside of the Body after "Harvesting" for 30-45 minutes. The Ventricles are just too "complex" and significantly delicate to stay Outside of a receiving Patient for ANY longer than such. So Yeah, even to Others...If You've been Medically Deceased for 2-3 Hours, even OTHERS don't want any of Your remains. So again, I hope this was, errrrr...SOMEWHAT, Informative...possible entertaining, and maybe even containing a little bit of Wisdom a possible Reader took away. I wrote WAY MORE than Anyone probably would have thought a Post would grow to a Length of in this Thread. I'm sorry for that. I admit, when it comes to Medicine and ALL of Its Practices...I'm Your Guy. I HOPE to become a Physician; Psychiatrist of such that Patients feel that they can readily approach. Although, having seen what Drug Addiction does to the Human Body, as well as "Spirit", there's no one that will be able to get over on Me. At least when it comes to receiving a Narcotic, or a Scheduled Medication, without a proper, thorough Clinical Self verification, as well as Medical used Machinery verified. And any Other methods, of going about getting down to the quick of whether a Patient is ACTUALLY in NEED of this Drug...Or if they're simply "Malingering".

Kay I'm done. You're Dead. I'm Dead. Thread's Dead.

working on the ambulance we have the ability to keep your dead body alive (your dead and theres "no hope" of bringing you back but your heart is still "beating" because we are making it and there some brain activity left) in order to get you to a hospital where the harvest your organs when your still "alive". so pretty much you can "be dead" but "alive till further notice"?

Brain dead is being dead.. You can live without a heart; well with proper medical equipment, but you'd pretty much be a vegetable..

This. This is the best answer. Unfortunately it happened to me just about an hour ago. I am now dead.
