I never had an offline friend I trusted more than my best friend of 17 years (who I met online). He's more my brother than my friend.

Also my best romantic relationship began online and carried over into offline (it lasted 2-3 years). I've had longer relationships but honestly none better. You notice I use the term "offline" and not "real life". They're both aspects of real life, both completely valid. Look up penpals someday. It's the same as we call offline these days and most penpal relationships last/lasted decades to lifetimes.

I have known people online longer than any of my real life friends. (going on 8-10 years now). I skype with them pretty much daily, we know pretty much everything about each other, we play games together.

I know their names where they live, what they look like, we've seen each other face to face via webcam.

I mean, really, how is it any different just because we live in the same area?

*confused*

Honestly, I used to move around so much that online friends were the only ones I could really keep.

They can be. RL "friends" aren't necessarily actual friends, after all. It just may be more difficult to establish the connection online, is all.

Online friends can be real friends. I just believe it's pretty rare to come out with friendship for life, where you can be gone for months, whatever, and still talk like normal, you love each other no matter what!

I envy people that can maintain their relationship online for years without meeting each other personally but via messages only.

Some people expect more on what online relationship they already have.
Some people like to tease, flirt, and experiment. Then, they go too far.

During my teenage years, I would definitely say online friends are real friends, but I no longer believe that as an adult. I do think online friends CAN become real friends after meeting in real life and establishing and maintaining friendship the old fashioned way.

I think they can be. One of my closest friend is someone I met online.

Yes they are. My best friend I met online and known her for over 8 years.

It all depends. 98% of the time I would say no until they are met offline. There are, however, a couple friends who I only talk to online who I would consider close enough to be a real friend.
