Hmmm. I wonder how this would apply to Log Horizon. We don't even know how much of their new reality is physical and how much is digital. The premise of the series is that people can change who they are, and even if the catalyst is digital that the essential change in or assuming of humanity is true and valid.

So that is one view. Another is SAO.

There, in the SAO arc the relationships that are formed in SAO are carried over to the real world, so it argues that yes, they are true relationships. In subsequent parts of the series while there isn't the association of the virtual world as a real world analogue, the fact that they are considered distinct from the real world allows for others to embrace fantasy avatars of themselves (literally as in Fairy Dance) or to utilize these virtual worlds to navigate real-world problems, like how Sinon does.

As our technology increases and new generations integrate technology further into their social lives, these viewpoints might actually begin to play out, in some form, in the real world, so I think that this topic is actually rather topical.

Which surprises me, General Forum and all dat.

Of course. I consider a friend to be someone you trust and like spending time with them when it being RL or online. I have an internet friend who I've talked to for almost 5 years. We're still good friends to this day.
