Say "I Love You" is a very nice one, as is Ao Haru Ride which aired only last season.

Toradora would also be a very good choice. I also love Golden Time, but maybe not for a first? There's nothing that would put you off, but I think after you've seen some more typical romances, you appreciate it more? I'm really not sure how to explain myself! Haha.

As for the School Days conversation, I certainly wouldn't recommend it for a romance anime, but it is one of my guilty pleasures! I've marathon'd it a few times now... *hides behind desk*

Why not? Everybody needs to see that show at least once.

Yeah, right on the top of the list of "What You Need To Do To Die Happy". List also includes you must watch The Room, see Nickelback live, and swap spit with an ebola patient.

What's wrong with nicklebacks? 5 DB packages are practically a necessity now.

Recommendations:

Toradora - http://www.crunchyroll.com/toradora
From Me To You - http://www.crunchyroll.com/kimi-ni-todoke-from-me-to-you

These two are definitely the two you should watch to begin your journey into Romance genre.

School days!
Then Aki Sora and Yosuga no Sora just to forget what happened from school days.

Well, if you're looking for something on Crunchyroll
Ef - A Tale of Memories
Ef - A Tale of Melodies
Hanasaku Iroha
Myself; Yourself
White Album
5 Centimeters Per Second

These are the ones I've enjoyed. There are plenty more. Like My Little Monster, Nisekoi, and The Kawai Complex Guide to Manors and Hostel Behavior which consist of Rom/Com.

I'll put in another vote for Toradora, that's what I started with. It's pretty enjoyable and the characters are well developed.

Don't listen to the guy he said to watch Yosuga no Sora and Aki Sora. I don't believe you want to see that kind of stuff. I recommend Toradora since it's a staple. I happened to love Nagi no Asukara, Fruits Basket and Kodocha.

Toradora is my all-time favorite anime. I bought the limited edition boxed set that came out a few months ago. Also, Spice and Wolf has subtle undertones (or overtones if you want to look at it that way) of romance, and it's an all-around great story in its own right. I have almost all of the books too which continue waaaay past the anime.

A couple more decent rom-com anime off the top of my head are Wagnaria!--otherwise known as Working!--and Kawai Complex (shortened titile).

If you're into action and romance I recommend Chaika the Coffin Princess which aired last, last season and is getting a continuation this season.

Thoughts off the top of my head. I didn't dwell too deeply on the question, but these should be great starters! By the way, as a guy, I absolutely love the romance genre in anime. Shoujo or shounen. I'm down. Usually. You'll figure it out, but it's definitely not a genre to look down on or miss. Happy watching!

Surprised no one has said Clannad yet.

I would suggest:
Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!
Engaged to the Unidentified
Itazura Na Kiss
kare kano
Kawai Complex Guide to Manors and Hostel Behavior
Mashiro-Iro Symphony
Myself Yourself
Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu
One Week Friends
Pet Girl of Sakurasou
Yoake Mae Yori Ruriiro na: Crescent Love

Other than the ones already mentioned here by other people. Checking these out should give a good start and be able to find some that you will like.

This. I forgot about the wonderful work that is Clannad. It's definitely up there on my favorites list.

- Toradora
- Say I Love You
- Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun (My Little Monster)

I'm currently watching Ao Haru Ride, (Blue Spring Ride) which I can say so far is a pretty good starter, too. Pretty simple. They're all short- 12 episodes max- but good starters.

Clannad is fantastic, but it's not available on Crunchyroll. It is on Netflix, though, if you have Netflix!

Clannad is available on Hulu, also. As well as the afterstory and the movie.. Don't even have to pay to play.
