It's all about Urbanization
Many of them get scholarships to play college football which is even more important. Speaking of football my university's team lost after a long streak

The only reason the kids in my HS weren't dead or in prison was because of the football and basketball teams. It has its benefits.

Sports have always been popular. Football is good for those who like sports and wish to keep active however not if you are pushing them so much. High schoolers are still young and don't need so much pressure that they miss their studies.

It's just part of our cultural makeup whether it makes sense or not. Whether we like it or not. It just is. It's part of our cultural history. The United States is very new compared to almost all other countries. We were still trying to find something that made us unique. Trying to find a unique sport that was just ours. It would be like asking why Kendo is so important in Japanese society. It just is. There's a lot of history with it for the same reason.

But in all seriousness.. I would agree with the others.. Lots of money to be made from football.. All in all, it is a pretty intense sport so I could see the attraction.. Especially when you know the players on a more personal level, like you might at a high-school football game..

Pshh the High school I used to go to spent all their money on Football, had an amazing stadium that could possibly seat 10k people, received the attention of the whole town yet lost every single freaking game. I played soccer in that H.S, won most of our district games, tournaments and made it far on state play offs, yet nobody knew who the heck we were.

It a favorite pastime in the States. American High school is important to the players since it may brings scouts to the games to recruit them going into college. If a scout recruits a player from that high school it puts the high school on the map for scouts and people to see that they have talent there. American Football also unites the school more than other sports since it is something everyone likes to watch and play.

My high school football team is at the top of the Scottish premier league right now - that's probably why. Then again, that's not owned or payed for (or even has the same name as anymore) by my high school so it doesn't really count.

Either way, for gridiron (or handegg as is the popular word now) I can see why it is popular in the US. Your league system is crap so a high school football team can't be the best in the country like mine is. It's a major source of pride to be top of a league and if you can see your high school team being one of the best in the only league it can take part in then it's a major source of pride for the whole school.

You can say that about any sport(or anything for that matter). Most people outside of the deep south don't get the appeal of NASCAR. Formula One Racing is extremely popular in every continent, but struggles in the United States. Americans largely don't care about Football unless its the World Cup, but European Football fans are far more crazy passionate for the sport dare I say even more than Americans are for American Football.

With the amount of attempted murders that happen after Rangers play Celtic - I'd say so.
