I wanna see a high school where not a single student decides to sign up or attend some kind of sport. I wonder what would happen then.

Cuz it's such a lively sport! Talent is shown while playing a game and if you ever tried to play real football.. it's a hassle. The objective is fairly simple to understand, the rules and fouls are not that hard to comprehend, and most of all.. you're watching people do things that you can't do. like hurdling over a tackler or running 10 yards 50 mph

coming from someone who played football his whole life all the way through high school and what would have been college if it wasn't for a certain knee injury its something you cant really comprehend unless you've experienced the sport yourself. Now I love my anime but there just something about playing football that gives you this sense of family amongst your teammates and a passion and drive to be the best you can be. I believe people in the schools make it a big deal because they most likely played the sport themselves and they want to see their school succeed. the high school I chose to go play at was very good at first but my class broke a 20 year losing record streak and took our school to the state playoffs 2 years in a row. not that being said more money was spent on our team because we also brought in a lot more fans causing more revenue. but money aside high school football really is a beautiful thing to experience if you ever have the chance to play.

the only reason why I ever went to any of my HS football games was because I was part of the band.

in college i jumped on the band wagon and rooted for Auburn University, University of Alabama, and Tennessee Volunteers.

now: i don't care.

Money is spent every year on uniforms and on the field while the rest of the school can't afford to put a single box of tissues in the classrooms! I don't hate football but i think its ridiculous how much money is spent on the program.

--This is the case for the State I live in.
If it is a public highschool, then the state gives a certain amount of money to the school and the money is split and given to the different departments in the school. (The state government, not the school, determines where the funds go and how much is given to each department).
The school can suggest the amount they need for each department but the government has the final say.
And the school is not allowed to move the funds from one department to another.
And if the school doesn't spend all the money, then next year their budget is cut by how much they didn't spend.

ex) Football gets 10 thousand and they only spend 7 thousand, then next year their budget is 7 thousand.

But schools don't want to lose money so they have to use all the money.

Of course all this money comes out of the taxpayers pockets, the money made from ticket/concessions/fundraisers (which isn't a lot) is just extra money they can use to buy more stuff.

So blame the government not the schools.

A Football(American) field is the modern day Colosseum.
And football players are the modern day Gladiators.

People seek thrill, excitement, and of course, violence.

From my personal experience of playing football for 8 years,
the appeal for comes from the strategy(Which most TV announcers don't know squat about) and struggle in competition.
I basically like to play any kind of game.

That is almost like asking Canadians why hockey is so important (other then being our national sport) no one really knows why. I live in the "Amareican" (as everyone out East calls us, then comes to us for jobs -.-) province in Canada and football was huge in high school and now college.

I'm curious too. If a high school decided to not have any sports and only academics along with some clubs, how good will it do?

A little variety goes a long way. I could care less for football, but without it the jocks would be bullying more i.e. kicking geek heads for sport.

^Pretty much that, I found it boring and went immediately back to my old school.
