I prefer sci-fi overall, but I really like fantasy too. In fact, both are my top two forms of fiction.

I like both, but I guess if i had to pick, then i'd go with fantasy.

I like sci-fi, but not the dark and gritty kind, i like the romantic world-focused type sci-fi. Basically, the kind of sci-fi that seems like fantasy, which is why I'm leaning more toward saying that I prefer fantasy.

For anime? Sci Fi. I can't think of any "high fantasy" type of anime that I'm really into. Unless you count things like Naruto/Dragon Ball as "fantasy." I'm assuming you're talking about things like dragons and witches though.

Fantasy always wins for me, I've been a dedicated fan ever since I read the Hobbit when I was eight. But I also enjoy good sci fi, and I especially like something that has a little of both. I think the lines can often be a bit blurred between these two genres, sci-fi that has a magical or mystical quality isn't uncommon at all. Or fantasy that begins with a sci-fi premise - e.g. people on a spaceship end up on a planet where they are able to use magic for some reason.

Fantasy has become a much broader genre than the original Arthurian 'swords, sorcery, and dragons' motif. If you search for fantasy themed anime you get everything from traditional epic adventures to contemporary slice of life shows with a sprinkling of magic or legendary creatures. I think Naruto definitely has some fantastical elements, I was never able to watch DBZ (don't like the super veiny art,) but I think Bleach also falls into that category.

For me a show has a fantasy type feel if it has magic, magical creatures, active Gods, and swords/archaic weaponry. Swords alone aren't enough, of course, you need some magic in there somewhere. If there's no magic but there are swords and dragons though, that also qualifies.

Just my two cents.

Edit: My favorite epic adventure anime: Twelve Kingdoms, Seirei no Moribito, Rurouni Kenshin (I think it counts,) Scrapped Princess, Inuyasha, and for current running shows Chaika is fun and Akatsuki no Yona, and Lord Marksman and Vanadis both seem promising.

Both. Besides, considering the kinds of shtick both like to pull, they might as well be one and the same.

anime wise, definitely fantasy. Technobabble is difficult to translate. Movie/tv series-wise, probably sci-fi. Book-wise... usually fantasy, but i love me some h.g. wells & jules verne and orson scott card (well i've only read ender's game but it was ahmazing).

I like fantasy a bit more. I guess because its not supposed to be believable. With sci-fi, the first part is "science" so it should be able to be explained in some way through science. Too many sci-fi things I've seen give the lamest explanations as to why something occurred that it might as well be fantasy because there isn't any indication that it was carefully thought out at all. What I'm saying is that poor writing is what destroys sci-fi for me. Also if the stories are sci-fi and of a terrestrial nature than I can deal with them. The minute it goes into outer space, you've lost me. I just don't like sci-fi stories in space.

I'm a bit more into fantasy than sci-fi though I do love both genres.. Must be the daydreamer in me who loves dragons..

I love them both honestly

but,

I'm gonna have to give it to fantasy, there's not enough sci-fi that interest, while I do like technobabble, fantasy is just fun.

Fantasy, I have a closet hatred or fear of Aliens (Or both!). After I watched the movie signs as a kid I will never forgive those aliens for what they did to those dogs, *Shakes hand violently*.
