You're more patient than me. For me, I'll watch 3 episodes of a show and if I feel that if the show doesn't make me wanting to see more at the end of the episode, I drop it.

If it is a series that has ended already I begin episode 7 and click on 10 minute marker for 1 minute to see if what is going on at that point is interesting to me. For new series I watch 3 episodes usually, sometimes it is so bad I quit halfway through episode 1.

I usually binge watch a show, when i'm done binge watching I either wonder "Time to binge watch again!" or "Why did I even watch this show?"

I do the same, and the reason I watch 10 episodes, say episodes 1-9 are slow and bad, but 10 is amazing

What I do is that I watch the first 5 episodes of an anime and if it doesn't suck me into it's story or if it doesn't interest me in the slightest I won't continue on

What I do is watch the entire show, and then I ask myself, "Was that good?"

If I say yes, then it was a good show.

If I hesitate, then the show sucked, but I don't want to audible admit i (kind of like back hair).

If I answer no, then it wasn't a good show.

And that's how I know, but it's not the known knowns that I'm worried about. It's the known unknowns -- the things I know I don't know -- that I worry about. Those shows slip through the cracks, but I don't know they do.

I've dropped shows after watching 10 minutes (Kill la Kill), but mostly I'll watch 1-2 episodes.

I usually watch a few episodes past the intro. I want to get a glimpse of the actual meat of the show, and usually the first few episodes doesn't tell me how the show will actually progress, how action scenes might play out, and if there are any characters that I can begin to like.

So for shows like One Piece, it would probably take a good 10-15 episodes before I've figured out if this is something I want to watch. Whereas shows like Gurren Lagann or Devil is a Part Timer I would decide in the first 4-5 episodes. Then there are the shows like SAO where I've watched a few episodes and haven't really decided either way, but it's short enough to watch all of the way through over a weekend.

It really depends, anime always has an unusual way of turning out better then a person thinks. I myself don't have patience like I use to considering there's so much more meh series out there then good (and the idea of good honestly depends on the individual and their own interests/patience), so I tend to be more picky nowadays.

The number of episodes is always a decent way to start, since you have to understand that a series that tends to be pretty short might not satisfy you or have as strong of a story as much as something that's ongoing or has multiple seasons, and As with longer series you have to adjust to casual displays of repetition and recaps, ect. It's best to just watch what you personally enjoy based off what you like and how much of it you see yourself to be able to really tell.

That or read summaries/reviews, people tend to usually let it be known when something is worth checking out.

For me, it's a simple question of did I enjoy what I watched? Even if I've only seen one episode, if I enjoyed it, it's a good show to me.
