Since this is an anime/manga website, we all have at some interest in Japanese culture. But how far and deep does your's go?

Hm.. My family says I'm deeply invested into it. A problem is that some of my family members feel like the Japanese are all racist to African Americans, so that proves to be an issue. They still support me a lot, luckily.

For what I enjoy in the culture, I believe I've mainly gotten into music; food; anime; video games; light novels; and some fashion. I may have gotten into some tech and mythology at a certain point, as well.

Anime's had a large effect on my life, though; I can't really help but love it. I was introduced to it in kindergarten or maybe a year or two before that when I started watching 4Kid's and Toonami's stuff on Saturdays. I later stopped watching for the most part due to Toonami going away and 4Kids I think was disinterest, but I'm honestly not sure. I later picked it up again when I found Funimation's On Demand channel and, as time went on, started going to other outlets for my anime.

To be honest, I'd say that I'm happy that it came into my life and that I'm thankful for it, as well. It's given me more motivation career wise (I want to be a video game developer and draw in an anime art style and develop VRMMOs, but of course not have that whole die in real life experience), excited and entertained me, influenced my writing, and helped me gain friends. Because of anime I came to this site and made friends who've honestly changed my life for the better. Because of anime I joined the Anime Club at school and had fun at its meetings. If it hadn't of been for my friends I'm sure there would've been a higher chance of me doing something to myself due to my depression, so, in all honesty, you could say that in a way anime saved my life.

I've always been interested in Japanese culture. Even before I started watching anime.
I started reading Japanese mythology in fifth grade and my interest soon turned to the Shinto religion.
Catholicism also has an interesting tradition in Japan and many martyrs came out of the persecution.

Not far. Just entertainment.

"only know basic Japanese culture."

Wouldn't call myself an expert (even if I read several books), unless I have lived there for several years. You can't really pick up people's cultures from books/watching their shows.

Like if you watch a show from Australia... you wouldn't get the full 360degree view of its culture... you'll just get the White people's culture.

The same can be said for Japan. Watching anime... you just get certain aspects but missed out on like 90% of other aspects of Japanese culture.

________

What I do notice though, is that the Japanese like to nod their head a lot when talking to people. I assume this is their sign of respect when talking to strangers/customers.

________

I also like the idea of bathhouses. We don't have those things in Australia.

I've been interested in Asian culture in general since before I knew what anime was. I saw pictures of my grandmothers trip to China which started it all. I then started reading on Eastern philosophy and religion in middle school. I went from Taoism to Shinto, and then Buddhist. I also find traditional Japanese architecture to be beautiful, and many customs to be really great.

My interest in Asian cultures did not lead me to anime and anime only introduced me to one segment of Japanese culture. Anime did make me interested in learning more about Japanese people as individuals and daily life though.
