Professionally, never. The world is a small place and you can get ahead from networking alone. You never know where you might find yourself in the future and you don't want someone from your past to stifle and opportunities that may come your way.

on a personal level, I have burned a few, but never without a good reason. i am not petty or spiteful. and i give people more than a handful of chances to show me their character. i always try to find the best in people and sometimes there are some individuals who just aren't good people. if i have distanced myself or just straight up cut ties from people, it's because I felt that it was better for me to not have those people in my life.

a good example are a few of my college friends. in those days I was a huge coke head and when I decided that I had to quit, my so called "friends" kept trying to pull me back into it. in the end they didn't respect my decision and they just wanted to continue to push their addictions onto me to validate what they were doing. it was best for me to just drop those people from my life.

Great tip dude! Didn't think about any of that but that really is an amazing and true thing about networking!

With personal things I have gotten so used to completely stopping any communication with people that at one point I thought were important that it has turned very easy to burn bridges. Doesn't mean I wont treat you like a human being if we see each other on the middle of the street, just don't expect me to say "Hope to see you again!" at the end. =|

yep! I've seen a few people get completely screwed because they let their personal differences lead to nasty fall outs with co workers, managers, and even HR people. if you work work retail, the people at the top are limited. and they are constantly moving around to different companies. funny thing is, when i left one of my previous jobs, it was because i didn't like how things were being run. fast forward 3 years later, that same manager who caused me all that trouble is now the director of stores for the company i work for now. but i left courteously and without burning any bridges and she's been treating me excellently!

The local police don't look too kindly on bridge burning... So I'm not allowed to do it any more...

Oh... You meant relationship wise... I try to avoid it, you never know who you might need help from or will turn to you for help.

Many bridges burnt in my past... while some are just more like faded. Haven't needed to do that in last years.
