Is there any music you've found that personally keeps you focused without influencing your words too much?

Good music is important because of my noisy circumstances. But any style of music makes my writing monotone. Is anyone else affected by this?

I will have a plan to write, I will get half a page done, play or hear a song somebody plays (I live with three other guys, it's not possible to have a silent environment), and will start to wish whatever I'm writing had the same punch I feel from the music.

So I start editing and before long, I have a half page of contradictory flair that even after time and in silence I can't figure out how to resolve and I will scrap the whole thing.

Do you think there is a way to (as much as I can) plan what I listen to in order to resolve this? Because I have a hard time switching fluidly between writing and listening, but I believe it's possible.

Any advice may help me, as confused as I am on this.

Do you visualize at all while listening to music? You should make a playlist to set different moods in a certain order.

If you were to listen to songs from TSFH, your stories will be golden. Just my opinion.

Funny enough, I need absolute silence to think when doing creative writing, but for drawing and typing papers that is a different story.

Incredible, it's chunch happening!

To be honest I can rarely visualize. Morseo, I think in words and sounds, only occasionally and with effort do I "see" things in my head.

That's a good idea, though. I should find a way to set aside a time limit for creative bursts, where I have a playlist of I'm thinking jazz, maybe two or three hours worth, then classical for an hour of editing, then my favorites for reflection and proofreading, maybe take notes but don't do editing to the hard copy.

Techno might have its first chance to appeal to me!

Writing is really becoming a more stagnant process these days. What a bother.

So if music is part of your process, keep telling me what I can do to make it part of mine.

But we have so many advantages today haha. Pretty sure Shakespear would've at least produced a couple more hundred books if he had our technology. :)

Are you at least consistent with your writing? If you're just scraping stories one after another, indeed it'd be a waste of time. But I'd say you're just focusing too much on getting down a "good" story and following a concept/formula that all writers do when they start. If what you're writing just sounds stupid, let it be stupid and build up or something.. kinda like what an anime does. If you're following a certain rule or module, let go of that. Take a moment in a steam bath, the source of creativity lol

The inspiration and where it comes from is flighty, that's true. I have produced some full pieces for projects, I have produced some empty ideas for other projects. They are usually big ideas that I swear I can write, and they get excited to draw or film, but a lot of the time I'm not happy with the result because it's only exactly what I could have written when I wrote it. A lot of things influence me in a day, I am trying to get more consistent in writing, because up until recently I've been so stuck I haven't had a single thing to write about that I didn't find boring.

I'm supposed to be producing a story for a webcomic a friend of mine wants to draw. But I hate to write dishonestly, so I usually just crank dull things with as much of my honest voice as I can think of and I'm considering now that some people get confused because they aren't listening to it, they're looking at it. But I don't know, I go about things with a large scheme, then struggle to fill the spaces between the main plot-points.

It doesn't flow as fast, and if I don't write at all I DON'T write at all. And with this project, that is not really an option. So here, I am looking for the chunch.

It's getting cold, a sauna sounds like the thing. I should probably take that advice, I might find the chunch there.

Weirdly, I have to say music helps me everything xD Drawing, writing, making stuff, designs, inspiration etc all goes the same or a bit better than if I did it without music. I only really listen to it on headphones so I guess it helps me focus and I don't get as distracted by everything around me...

Everyone's different though!

Music is second only to the entirety of the anime world to me. I draw inspiration from music. Not directly from what it's saying, rather how it makes me feel. There's quite a bit of characters and development in my stories that were directly inspired by a specific song.

As for your chunch problem, I think it's important, at least in my case, that you stop changing the type of music or specific song once you get a groove going. Let's say that you start listening to Kanon Quartet and you start thinking about a great idea about the harmony between 4 people and how amazing it would be if it continued to progress, changing only ever so slightly, to create a beautiful sound...I mean story. Sort of like that. Anyway, once I get an idea like that I'll keep listening to it until I feel like I have captured the true essence of it in my writing.

On another note I think I can understand about being stuck writing things you find boring. It's hard for me to convince you that what you do is great when you think that it's boring yourself. You are your own worst critic and as an artist/writer, you will never be completely satisfied with something because you are always trying to better yourself. I think that's fine and it's important to remember that but I also think that it's important to do it anyway. As much as you'd want something to be better, it won't ever BE if it never gets done. I guess what i'm trying to say is get the idea down, flesh it out and even if you think it's crap, archive it. Crappy achievements are still achievements after all. And who knows? Maybe someone will like your shit anyway.

Hope that helps a little, maybe?

Music inspires me a lot when I'm thinking about stories (sometimes a song will give me an idea for a plot point, etc), but I get way too distracted by it when I'm actually writing! I can't even draw with it usually because it takes away my focus. ; 3;

I like white or pink noise when I am writing,
or other than that pretty much anything.
Of course I prefer that screaming devil worshipping
music any time of day

Either Sigur Ros or Godspeed You! Black Emperor would be good for writing, if you pick the right song.
