I cannot stand your taste in music. Yours. You ask me listen to your tunes, and some of them are really good, but so much of it is terrible and it makes me so frustrated how excited you are about them.

So I ask you, why can't I stand listening to what you think are the ultimate tunes, and why do you think my tunes all sound like the same crappy song?

And why, if I can't stand them, is it so important to you that I appreciate it I have to pretend it is a good tune?

I will start.

I didn't like Woods when I first heard them. I thought they sounded like a crummy knockoff of Neil Young. But then I found a song off of their third album that really caught my attention. I didn't love it, it was too poppy and repetitive to really set me off. But it was, at that point, the best Woods song I had ever heard. I have never been one to appreciate "oooh"s at lyric or falsettos, but the way each repetition builds and changes is fascinating to me.

I don't understand the video, but it is interesting. This was the first time I've seen it.

So when I started to look a little closer at Woods, tried some other songs, I found a few golden tracks hidden amongst the turds. The friends of mine who listen to Woods have different golden tracks, different turds, but we all agree that when these guys are on, they are on.

But your music, what would it take for me to get into it?

But why am I allowed to like music in the first place?

This is the question, this is what I'm asking you personally.

Glorious.

I only ask that you get to know me well enough to understand this pretense. It's how I present my thoughts.

I may be kinda assuming in my presentation, so I get it when it falls flat, but I intend to make fun of nobody but myself, and to learn. It is not obligatory, you don't have to waste your time on it. It is an anime forum, I am writing on it.

This is it, this is the chunch.

But you don't have to like the music I like. If you like some bands I like, awesome! If not, well that's okay too.

Here's a thought: The failure mode of clever is asshole.

As for me, I'm not going to work to make you like my music. You can try listening to the bands I like. You might hate some, you might love some, you might be indifferent overall. It's up to you to decide, but you have to do the work of actually listening and evaluating the music.

Even if I tried to convince you that a certain song is good, I'd likely fail. Music is an intensely personal experience. I know my musical tastes don't match up 100% with anyone else. That's a great thing, in my opinion.

Hahaha, that's basically it! But it doesn't seem like you can stand it either, so I'm glad you answered honestly.

It's not so much that I dislike different opinions, though, so don't get me wrong. It's more like I don't like opinions that people hold without any thought or reason. So excuse me or don't, but I'm not giving up.

What's your reason for liking the garbage music you listen to? I might be able to appreciate it if you have just one thing you like in it that you can put into words. If you don't, then you'll have to forgive my disgust. Your reasoning is unclear to me.

I'm here to say your taste in music is unacceptable to me, and I'd like to know why you're listening to it. It's a rude question with a strong preface in the first place, but I've been looking for honest answers so there's no sense to me in laying it out in a way I do not feel. I'm surprised all the responses are directed at my tone, and not my question about your taste in music.

I mean seriously, how could you listen to that for entertainment? The best way to get somebody who feels this way about anything to shut up is with a well crafted answer to their actual question. So, well played, but I still think your music is awful.

Also, please don't quote me as saying things I did not say. I don't mind getting my statements ripped apart or made fun of, but I can't have people changing my words. I chose them many reasons.

I'd hate to miss giving something good a second look just because my first impression was that it didn't fit my tastes. But I also appreciate that you don't feel obligated just because I have a problem with it. Interesting...

But if you do feel like changing someone's initial opinion to share something that you think holds some chunch, rather than to keep it to yourself or to openly disgust them, this would be an opportunity.

This is definitely a personal problem.

Why does someone else's positive experience or excitement have any negative impact on you?

Regardless of if it's terrible in your opinion.

Haha, I agree totally but I'm not any closer to understanding the music. But you nailed it, that's what I'm saying, not really trying to make myself a pariah, but I'd rather not be misunderstood.

I want to know why it's having a positive impact so that I can separate whether I'm confused about what I'm hearing or if it really doesn't suit my tastes, and I want to do it faster and with more insight. Clearly there is something to be enjoyed in it, if you are enjoying it, and I take you seriously as a person with tastes.

It's jealousy and greed and impatience with a touch of hedonism, I want to hear and enjoy as much music as often as I can, but sometimes I need a place to start. I'm not going to avoid my meanest feelings about it either, especially in an open anonymous forum.

It's totally a personal problem. I'm just asking anyone who wants to share music with a hater who is willing to listen to a song you like and about why you like it, even though he is positive he will not, to freely do so.

I figure if I address the personal problem honestly and directly and I can get honest insights, something great might come of it. Guess I'm mostly just being called an asshole, but that's kinda great too as long as it's at least being done directly and honestly.
