I'm NOT referring to the cliched anime villains who are just power hungry maniacs and are just hurting others because they're evil by nature.

I'm referring to antagonists like L or Light. Where the line between good and evil isn't so clear.

Does this frustrate you when characters are dismissed as cold villains and killed off?
Do you know any characters who had actual reasonable motives for what they did and you feel as though they were actually good people?
Did you want any antagonists to actually win?

The ones I could think of are Kiritsugu of Fate Zero and Makishima of Psycho-Pass

EDIT: Also, Nine and Twelve of 'Terror In Resonance'. They were sorta like Antagonists and Protagonist at the same time...

Yes, I do, and I think those Antagonists are the best ones!

Hmmm I can't really say I sympathize with antagonists, though I have a few that I really like their style. For example,

Hiruko Kagetane from Black Bullet

and Beatrice the Golden Witch from Umineko no Naku Koro Ni (I guess I sympathize with her since the doesn't kill PURELY for the fun of it and that she has a sensible motive behind it all.

Too bad that one have to get to the background story to understand it.

Most bad guy are one doing their jobs.

Yes. I like characters who are morally grey, so sometimes I end up liking the antagonists more than the protagonists if the protagonists follow the stereotypical "morally perfect hero" mold. I also tend to like the slightly creepy characters. Some of my favorites include Kabuto from Naruto, Tousen from Bleach, and Kiriko from Black Jack.

Antagonist. The character who is second most important. Also the main source of conflict for the protagonist. Not in that order.
On that note, a protagonist is the main character.

My favourite villains are those who you can either sympathise or see where they're coming from.

The two antagonists that come to mind for me that I've ever felt even remotely sorry for or that had good reasons for what they did are Gin from Bleach,
and Count Saazbaum from Aldnoah.Zero,
Gin I never really liked from the start though, and only felt a bit of sympathy for him when we found out the true reason of why he was doing what he was doing, and the same with Count Saazbaum,

Ant King Meruem

Meruem's final moments with Komugi was one of the most touching scenes I've ever seen in Anime.
I doubt there'll ever be another villain like him.

Meruem

He was born as a chimera ant to rule the worlc, he then acknowledged humanity when he met a girl, he chose to stay with her in his last seconds instead of revenge

Lucia Raregroove
