You'd think there would be more, considering Japan's geography, but Ponyo and Nagi-Asu are the only animes I've seen so far with an water/ocean setting.

That's annoyingly relevant, since people ship ships. XD
Though, in my opinion, that show needs less mental models and more naval battles. The first few episodes were exciting (scifi naval battles!), but it didn't really keep it up.

I'd like for there to be something like Blue Submarine no. 6, but better. More Gargantia would also be nice.

Takao was the only thing I was watching that show for

Go check these out, it's pretty good :

Mars Daybreak is similar to Cowboy Bebop except it takes place on Mars and underwater, while Tactical Roar, although it has romcom drama and fanservice actually has quite a few naval battles.

I'll have to look at those.
Though the first one makes me think of one of the scenarios in the xkcd book (oceans draining through a portal at the bottom of the Marianas Trench to Mars). Why is there an ocean on Mars?

It was in the story, I forgot exactly but it had something to do with the first martian settlers. They have a pretty funny episode about them too, they live like Native Americans in teepee's and stuff, but inside they have like big screen TVs and play FPSes. The main character is also more of a merchant than he is a warrior. It's a unique anime, it has a lot of action but it's definitely not a stupid show. It definitely feels like Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop, or Vandread.

That reminds me, Aria also has oceans on Mars. But Aria is a really unique anime, it's like Sci-Fi slice of life all super mellow.

With Tactical Roar the main character is an insurance agent who is sent to this military vessel for some reason which happens to be commanded by his step-sister who he has had a crush on since he was really young. They have romcom stuff go on, but there is also a lot of political crap with the government and war crap going on with pirates... Think of it sort of like Bodacious Space Pirates or Bakuretsu Kaizoku or whatever that show was called except in the ocean and with a bit of romcom.

They are all pretty old animes, like 2004-2006, around that time.

There is no such thing as a "stupid" ship, just one you do not like or agree with.

Seriously, how much fighting over fictional characters can you do? Ridiculous.

But there you are - that's your personal opinion that deems it "stupid". To someone else, that could be their favorite ship, or something they really like so it wouldn't be "stupid" to them.

You seem to have forgotten that specific ship is canon, in the anime and the novel.
