Forgive me if there is already a thread for this, but has anyone played Fate/Extra? If so does it lend anything to the Fate story line?

Okay so I haven't played it but did a bit of research on it. I mean I heard the game isn't terrible, just not great. It has nothing to do with the storyline but will use some of the same characters to be other Masters -- I know Rin is one. You have your own character, who is a silent protagonist. Also the servants are a bit different, Saber isn't the same Saber from the anime (even though she looks the same).

Have it, played it, beat it. What SoulEaterQUEEN said is all correct. Certain characters from the series will appear in the game, but there is no correlation between the two. It's all just extra material, see what I did there lol.

Just wondering though -- how long is the game in length? From what I heard, it's a relatively short game ~ 20 hours. Is this true?

Beat it too. The game play isn't that great and you need to do tons of grinding, the 3 selectable servant is Saber, Archer and Caster

Saber look like F/Z and FSN saber execpt with a little bit of boob and red clothes
Archer is still your good old snarky archer.
Caster is an original character voiced, who is very genki and insist that your character ( even if female ) take her as a wife.

The story itself however don't add anything to the fate storyline since the holy grail war itself is a spin-off.

But i would say if you are playing the game for gameplay, you will be disappointed. Play it for the story and interaction between you and your servant. Caster is extremely weak early on but after a bit of leveling and putting points into strength and endurance points. You can survive normal enemy even if you happened to make a lot of mistake when fighting with normal enemy. Saber is OP early on, my younger brother blasted through the first two enemy servant without even stopping to grind ( He hate grinding ), and all he need is pour tons of stats into strength. As for archer i can't say since i hadn't finished his route yet. ( Decided to just watch the cutscenes from youtube instead )

There is probably total of 6 route since half way through the middle of the game, you will have to choose to save between Rani ( Another original character ) and the resident tsundere Rin, but there's not much difference between them if you played the same route with different servant. Even Archer/ Rin route don't change much from other Rin route with other servant other than a mana "rechange" scene and a hilarious archer conversion ( since this Rin is a "different" Rin )

Favorite servant is Caster because well her voice is nice to listen to, and her interaction with your character is hilarious too if you choose the correct answers in some of the conversion segment. I believe her voice actress is Chiwa Saito, who is voicing Yona from Akatsuki no Yona this anime season.

As for eh how long, i think 20 hours is about right, if you don't do a lot of grinding. Can't remember my clear time since i lost my psp long ago, and i played it right around it got released.

As this is one of my favorite PSP games, as well as the title that got me into the Fate franchise, let me add this: This is an alternate universe, though still written by the original writer (Nasu). No prior knowledge of anything related to Fate is necessary. I recommend picking Saber on your first playthrough, as the game can be obnoxiously difficult in spots, especially during certain Servant fights. But the story is fantastic, and makes it all worth it. (Save frequently! It is very easy to die.)
