Discussion

Synopsis

In August of 20XX, a portal to a parallel world, known as the "Gate," suddenly appeared in Ginza, Tokyo. Monsters and troops poured out of the portal, turning the shopping district into a bloody inferno.

The Japan Ground-Self Defence Force immediately took action and pushed the fantasy creatures back to the "Gate." To facilitate negotiations and prepare for future fights, the JGSDF dispatched the Third Reconnaissance Team to the "Special Region" at the other side of the Gate.

Youji Itami, a JSDF officer as well as a 33-year-old otaku, was appointed as the leader of the Team. Amid attacks from enemy troops the team visited a variety of places and learnt a lot about the local culture and geography.

Thanks to their efforts in humanitarian relief, although with some difficulties they were gradually able to reach out to the locals. They even had a cute elf, a sorceress and a demigoddess in their circle of new friends. On the other hand, the major powers outside the Gate such as the United States, China, and Russia were extremely interested in the abundant resources available in the Special Region. They began to exert diplomatic pressure over Japan.

A suddenly appearing portal to an unknown world—to the major powers it may be no more than a mere asset for toppling the international order. But to our protagonists it is an invaluable opportunity to broaden knowledge, friendship, and ultimately their perspective towards the world.

Sounds similar to Outbreak Company. Though more action oriented and less political in nature.

I enjoyed this manga a lot until it turned to a rape h-doujin. Before that it was a fun jaunty adventure about a otaku soldier deployed into a fantasy world who gets a funny harem and takes down dragons with rocket-propelled grenades.

That sounds fantastic. Is it worth picking up despite the crazy rape h nonsense? Last manga I read that turned out that way was "wolf guy" and it just completely killed it for me.

I don't remember how far in it was but there's a fair number of chapters before it happens. I can easily recommend that first part of the manga, it was a lot of fun. After that depends on the reader, it just threw me off too much to continue.

Well it is Medieval fantasy meets modern day world so rape unfortunately is to be expected at some point. When an army takes a village or defeats an enemy they don't just take money and valuables they also take the woman for obvious reasons.

I thought this was my thread for a second haha. This is great news. If they do make an anime, I'd be very interested in how they will adapt it. As well as how they'll handle the "hotsprings" chapter. And no, not talking about naked girls here.

Eh Is it really a harem though? I mean, Only one girl really likes him in a romantic way. The other two see Itami more like a father figure I guess. But yeah, it can get pretty gritty sometimes. Rape, eating people, slaves ect.

How did that happen....Writer switched genres? Or publication.....

He's kind of overblowing it. There is rape, but it's only implied rape. And well, that's just how shit happened back in the medieval ages. That's the time period the fantasy world is in. Don't let that dissuade you though. Give it a read. It's one of those manga that has so much going on in each page, you have to re-read it a few times to get all the little stories.

Edit: To be clear I'm not criticizing people for liking this series. It just went completely against the grain of what I had been getting out of the story up to that point. It turned something I did like into something I didn't like, that's all.

Dunno, I was just like "Yay a new chapter's out!" Then I read it, and then I dropped it. And was sad. Like I'll read explicit material, my tastes are more vanilla but I don't object on principle. It just totally wrecked the happy fun escapism vibes.

It is nowhere near that comedic. It is gritty enough that I would like to see the same people who did Attack on Titan make this series.

One of the things I like about it is how they handle modern weapons in a fantasy setting and the psychology of modern soldiers. The main character is supposed to be a graduate of the US Army's Ranger school, and he reminds me of several Ranger school graduates I have met. I also loved how they showed the modern soldiers' reaction to slavery.
