Judge an anime by its cover

I often judge anime by their cover art. A lot of times I'll skip over a show because of it. Although it's not usually the art itself that bothers me, but more how the characters are presented in it, or the overall feel/ambiance I get from it. I'm not quite sure how to explain, but there are some shows whose cover art makes it look like a very generic series (for example, Magical Warfare):

And then there are series where I'll see the cover art and think that it looks interesting, but that it looks like a show with a slowly-developing plot and a calmer feel to it (for example, Nagi no Asukara):

Or there will be a series that looks so interesting or exciting that I must pick it up right away to see what it's like (example here being Attack on Titan):

And these are just a few examples. Often times, I'll judge a lot more about a series upon seeing the cover art.

Here's my attempt at guessing the premise of a series I haven't seen or heard of yet:

I ended up seeing the titles of the first two episodes, along with their thumbnails. Before seeing them, I was going to guess that this was a harem series, with the brown-haired girl being the main heroine. But now I'm gonna guess...it's a yuri series. Set in high school. And the brown-haired girl in the middle is the main character. And this may be a yuri harem, I dunno.
Although I'm also starting to think that maybe it could be something similar to Love Lab...?

After I watched Madoka Magica I vowed to never judge an anime by its cover ever again.

Should I watch this show? I keep hearing people say its good. Eh, you know what, i'm just adding it to my queue.

I think it's really good. Although, I guess I do have a thing for Mahou Shoujos that aren't the typical "Mahou Shoujo".

If you want a dark show that completely deconstructs magical girl shows, go for it.

Watch Madoka. You won't regret it.

Well, having watched it now, you guys were right. It was pretty good. Especially for a magical girl show. The character art style was something I wasn't a huge fan of, but besides that it was great. The plot twists were surprisingly similar to Shinsekai Yori's. And of course,
Overall, it definitely falls under the don't judge by it's cover category. I'll probably have to watch the recap movies now so I get a better understanding of the story in light of certain knowledge... and then I'll hit up the sequel movie which apparently is really good.

Yeah pretty often :/ and I know I shouldn't but I still do. If I don't like the art/drawing style I will refuse to watch/read the series unless someone recommends it to me specifically....but that hardly ever happens so most of the time I just have to eventually find out the storyline via the interwebz or friends and Ill go "Hey! That actually sounds pretty interesting! I guess Ill go watch it now"

"oh look another mecha anime i'll probably get confused/bored in the first episode or two like in every other mecha anime i've tried to watch..."

My guess: Harem. All the girls fall in love with the guy. That little girl holding the stuffed animal is a brat (possibly a 300 years old witch). The long purple haired one is a tsundere. the white haired one is a klutz.

The red haired one has a balanced personality...

xD... I'll watch this later to see if I'm right. Will edit my post.

Sometimes I do. I mean if the cover features sexy girls and the title is something like "Hot tentacle action", it is clearly porno.

Many years ago, humanity discovered alien technology on the moon, which could be used for many things, including teleporting oneself to Mars, and also living there. Naturally, a group of people took advantage of this technology and did just that, and became "Martians." A war broke out some years ago when the Martians fancied themselves superior to the "Terrans." The war is officially stopped eventually, but tensions remain. After an idealistic Martian princess goes to Earth to promote peace, a sect of Martian terrorists kill the princess and frame it on Earth, and the Martian army uses this as an excuse to invade Earth and "claim what's rightfully theirs."

Naturally, the princess isn't really dead and teams up with Earth forces to try and stop the war as soon as she can, the war she feels responsible for.

Sound interesting? lol, it was pretty good, though it did have its goofy moments now and then. It's almost impossible to find a mech show that isn't goofy these days :/

I don't judge stuff based on the promo art, I'm either going to watch it already, or I'm not by the time poster promos roll around.

But there are some that are just completely misleading.

Medaka Box S1

The first season poster was really misleading (the S2 poster was a bit more honest) and looked nothing like how the first season turned out.

The gorgeous, peerless student council president, Medaka Kurokami, solves everyone's problems! Medaka Kurokami, who has just become Sandbox Academy's 98th student council president, sets up a suggestion box as promised in her election campaign. "Your dreams belong to you. Go after them and make them come true yourself. Your worries, however, belong to me. Send them all my way!!" As Medaka solves her fellow students' problems along with her friend since childhood, Zenkichi Hitoyoshi, her suggestion box, nicknamed the Medaka Box, earns great popularity among the students
