They use facial mask to diminish the risk of spreading germs to others.

I like it when they become creative with their facial masks though. It's badass and stuff.

And that can be seen as one of the delinquents in animes that always wear a mask and carrying a weapon.

So, does this in any way relate to the fact that these same series usually manage to sneak in hot springs and swimsuit episodes? Might these escapades also contribute to the likelihood of catching cold?

I couldn't agree more aha, you don't see the "cold" in more serious anime.

There have been some pretty strange ideas about what will make you sick in Western cultures as well, back in the day they used to think that bathing during the winter would make you sick.

The Japanese have some other interesting wives' tales about sickness - when I was living in Japan I was warned not to take a bath in the afternoon because I would get a fever. I'd never heard that one before.

Also, ever noticed that in America we say carrots are good for eye health but in Japan they tout blueberries for their ocular benefits?

Agreed with previous remarks regarding plot device

It's just a plot device

If you analyze and focus on every single tiny little thing you might end up not enjoying anything

When I stayed in the Philippines, I was warned not to go to bed right after a shower because going to sleep with your hair wet could cause blindness. Hadn't heard that one before. . .
