This is not a bad thing.

I only have a few dvds and a few other things but I'm not going to go out of my way to collect everything. I've never cosplayed or been to a convention either. But just like you, I've watched a lot of anime too, and I am still watching them now.

I guess I kind of fail as an otaku/weeaboo too in a sense of not owning a lot of anime related things. But who cares. I'm just going to go enjoy the world of anime!!!!!

Same here. I find figurines stupid, too lazy to buy a poster, too much money for DVDs, and con requires (usually) to cosplay.

You know I've tried joining up with some local groups... but honestly I just CANNOT connect with other Otaku. Its weird that I can love something so fricken much, but just cant click with people who love it too. I find them kinda weird tbh.

There's a word for that... No offense, but it's called having a introvert personality.

179 Anime* and 5454 episodes later, and I still don't Otaku right.

Can you double check that number because if you have only watched 179 anime in 15 years I don't think you should call yourself 'Otaku'. Unless you reaalllyyy like anime.

Also of course you cannot connect with people based off anime by itself, that'd be like trying to make friends based off watching television; you can't, there are too many shows. My school has an anime club and I could never be friends with any one of those people because we have incompatible personalities.

However I have made friends with a single person based off an anime connection but they're not an otaku they just like anime.

lol I've been a fan of anime for a long time and have never purchased a disc or figurine and my first Comic Con was this year because my sister got free tickets. Being a poor anime fan is hard.

That's not right, introvert personality means that the person finds it difficult to express them self. However in this case she is not saying that she is having difficulty expressing herself but having difficulty talking to other anime fans or 'otaku' because she cannot connect with them.

You're missing out, once you get enough dvds you can make a fort with them!

Just pulled some stuff from Wikipedia:

Otaku - is a Japanese term for people with obsessive interests. In modern Japanese slang, the term otaku is mostly equivalent to "geek" or "nerd". When these people are referred to as otaku, they are judged for their behaviors - and people suddenly see an “otaku” as a person unable to relate to reality

Japanophilia is an interest in, or love of, Japan and everything Japanese; its opposite is Japanophobia. One who has such an interest or love is a Japanophile, sometimes derogatorily called a weeaboo.

Soooo.... why would someone like to self-identify as an otaku or weeaboo?

I'm sorta the same way... I mean, I do own some Blu-Rays of my favorite series, but that's pretty much it. I've never been to a convention and probably never will. I know this will probably sound offensive to some people, but maybe you don't connect with Otaku, because you're not that nerdy... I mean, I'm not saying that being nerdy is bad, but It's hard for me to have a conversation with an Otaku, specially in person... Mostly because anime is the only thing they could talk about (the ones that I have talked to in person, at least). I would try to change the conversation and they would automatically go back to it. Maybe that's it? or Am I totally wrong? Anyways, you don't need to call yourself otaku or weaboo to enjoy anime and you certainly don't need to buy DVD's, posters, figures etc... to be a fan of it.

Sorry if I offended anyone, that's not my intention.

Depends, if you buy directly from Crunchyroll, they might have some kind of on site medal. They seem to have medals for everything else?

I've bought many things. No medals.

But I meant an Otaku fairy isn't going to come from the sky and grant her a medal of honor.

Darn, no medals :/ Well, there goes that theory. Also, please say it's not so! I have always dreamed about the great Otaku fairy and now you're saying that she won't be coming? This is terrible news!
