OP, you don't actually want to be an otaku, anyway. The ideal thing for an anime fan is to be one without being a total weeb lol

Seriously.

I've been watching anime since I was 10 (Im 25 now, yes im getting old and still like anime), but I have bought 0 series on disk, don't own a single figurine or poster, and never really joined an anime club!

Hell I've never even been to a convention with anyone or cosplayed !

179 Animes and 5454 episodes later, and I still don't Otaku right.

*edit*

Just to seal the deal here.. I've been a crunchyroll member since 2011.. this is my first post (pretty sure anyway).

Congratulations, You're normal.

Kidding aside It took me a long time before I bought anything anime related. Not sure about you but for me the cause was letting other people find out I liked anime, hell It still is. Only anime related things I own are the different versions of the Ghost in the Shell movies, and just recently started buying the Gundam: The Origins manga series. Oh and some Gunpla but after their built they go directly into the closet.

I've been close to going to the closest anime convention the last two years in a row but I just can't. I guess I'm just trying my hardest not to Otaku right(also gotta keep all that lovey dovey anime hidden). lol

Didn't think anybody wanted to be a weeaboo...

Been watching a lot longer than you, and I'm a lot older. I've had opportunities to go to cons, Metrocon is within minutes of me in Tampa.
I haven't felt obligated to need to do any of them though, it's just another hobby that I can or don't do everything available for it.
Even visiting Japan, in two weeks we only hit up a couple shops when we hit Shinjuku, including Animate's multi-story cosplay store.
Admittedly, I did buy a cell phone charm of Eevee pulling a rickshaw... It was just sorta cool. I also have some random types of figures, many DVD's, a few blu-rays, and even some VHS tapes!
If you're near the Tampa area, creepy as it sounds, I'll go to Metrocon with you, maybe even cosplay too. We could get a group going or something.

I wonder how many episodes I have watched. How the hell do you even figure that out? I've seen about 210 series, but Fairy Tale and Gintama are definitely going to screw up the episode count. I might to try to figure this out when I am hungover.

Meh, I don't really care for trivial matters like that to determine if I'm a mega weeb or not. I own very few anime DVDs, but I do own one box set. I don't even use 'em though; everything's available online. Netflix and Hulu has been kind to me, as well.

Can you double check that number because if you have only watched 179 anime in 15 years I don't think you should call yourself 'Otaku'. Unless you reaalllyyy like anime.

Also of course you cannot connect with people based off anime by itself, that'd be like trying to make friends based off watching television; you can't, there are too many shows. My school has an anime club and I could never be friends with any one of those people because we have incompatible personalities.

However I have made friends with a single person based off an anime connection but they're not an otaku they just like anime.

It is very possible the number is higher, I am very lucky and unlucky in the fact I have a HORRIBLE memory. This means I can rewatch anime like its my first time seeing it woo woo, on the other side I have to keep a very detailed anime list or forget all about it.

Just pulled some stuff from Wikipedia:

Otaku - is a Japanese term for people with obsessive interests. In modern Japanese slang, the term otaku is mostly equivalent to "geek" or "nerd". When these people are referred to as otaku, they are judged for their behaviors - and people suddenly see an “otaku” as a person unable to relate to reality

Japanophilia is an interest in, or love of, Japan and everything Japanese; its opposite is Japanophobia. One who has such an interest or love is a Japanophile, sometimes derogatorily called a weeaboo.

Soooo.... why would someone like to self-identify as an otaku or weeaboo?

I am obsessive about anime, and I don't see that as a negative thing, I love it so who cares really. Plus its not the only thing in my life.

As for the weeaboo? Yes I am a weeaboo , I legally changed my name to Reika Michiko, I am currently saving up for a $15,000 month long vacation to Japan with my boyfriend, and ultimately I am working out ways to move there. \o/ What can I say, I hate the US.

Darn, no medals :/ Well, there goes that theory. Also, please say it's not so! I have always dreamed about the great Otaku fairy and now you're saying that she won't be coming? This is terrible news!

I am the same exact way, ive watched anime since i was 8yrs old and im 21 now and ive never owned a single figure or dvd/blu ray and ive never went to a con(even though i want to). Sometimes i think about that, but everyone is different and if everyone was the same life would be boring. What i am trying to get at is you are no less of an anime fan than someone who has a room full of anime dvd's and shit. hell with the number of animes you have watched you are probably an even bigger fan:).

I think this is actually very untrue, if everyone thought like you do we wouldn't have an anime industry like we do today. Paying 8 bucks a month to third party streaming service is not enough to support the industry you claim you love. I also don't believe that you could have watched anime since you are 8 and only watched it legally. You are one of the moochers thinking that you deserve everything for free and because of that I pay more for my stuff.

Your not gonna like what I have to say then. I am pretty sure I have never payed for any of the anime I have watched, maybe a few of them came from watching on crunchyroll but im not sure which ones. Oh an some from netflix.

The fact that I have spent the last 4 years on this site without messaging or posting a single thing seems to suggest otherwise. You're projecting your feelings there hun.

Judging by the amount of episodes he must have spent a lot of time watching some of the long running juggernauts like DragonBall O One Piece or something. Assuming each episode is twenty minutes (A pretty safe assumption) he has watched a little under two and a half months of anime, not a small amount by any means.

I'm 29 so no worries on the age thing for being an Otaku! I own a handful of DvD's but they were all given to me, never purchased any. I have 5 hard copies of Manga but otherwise I have everything streamed so don't have any of it local.

I keep careful track on my profile page. I update it immediately after finishing an anime.

Welcome to the club of people who've never done anything anime related. I just recently (As in 3 years ago recent) went to my first, and so far, only anime convention at Anime Matsuri 2011. Didn't even cosplay. Only bought one DVD (GaoGaiGar Season 2 TV Series) and a cheap ass bokken/wooden sword. The bokken broke after 5 times of some practice with it. Didn't even go all mad crazy with it. And I bought the worlds most garbage airsoft pistol. My dad broke it though. He always tries to break stuff that I by so that I won't have it. Thanks to me I'm living alone now. With help.

Gonna buy a Deadpool costume soon. Gonna finally cosplay for once. And when I do go to a convention next time, I'm gonna party like a dead... Pool.

You do know that some people only care about being Deadpool and the bling right? And that any time Deadpool is seen with women, they're either hookers or his imagination. I'd fit right in.

@ReikaMichiko

Does it matter if you're Otaku or not? Sounds like you're just a normal person to me. So there is nothing to fret about.

Personally I hate it when the word, "Otaku", is thrown around for anyone who likes Japanese animations and comics and buying related merchandises.

Real Otaku is database "expert" of whatever subject that he or she is into. I've seen Heavy Metal music Otaku who knows every little aspect of certain Heavy Metal musician's life. So it's not limited to world of anime and manga.

That being said, anyone who can't explain WHY he likes his favorite obsession in detail, then he is not Otaku. He is just an audience who happens to enjoy what he/she watches.
