Aincrad arc was decent at best. ALO was just bad. GGO fixed some of the pacing issues, gave someone other than Kirito some development and screen time, and thankfully didn't have Sinon suddenly say "OMG I LOVE YOU KIRITO-KUN!" Overall, SAO is pretty mediocre and according to light novel readers, it doesn't get better than GGO.

Sword Art Online was a good initial start. After the first couple of episodes, it really stood out as an anime that could really be something. Then they took their female badass leader and made her a love interest, butchered her character, made her a housewife who never actually fought until Kirito told her to, focused on their initial love and purposely gave Kirito a harem. For no reason. They overpowered Kirito to keep the plot going, they made Asuna and every other girl a loving damsel in distress that Kirito just HAPPENED to stumble upon and to top it off, the ALO arc?? Nah.. Incest. Rape. Tentacle Rape ( well kinda implemented ). The stupid.. wings.. fairies.. Yui is back?? I don't. Sword Art Online was great. The first two to four episodes? Amazing. Everything else kind of sucked. Gun Gale Online? They should have made that the whole second season. It was a fresh new aspect on SAO and that was their most enjoyable. But this is just.. no.

I don't actively go around hating on it, but I do dislike SAO. Most of my reasons have been brought up by previous posters, like Kirito being OP and the female characters being two-dimensional and tropey. I also think that aside from Kayaba Akihiko most of the antagonists have been pretty hokey and poorly written ( I swear if Sugou had a mustache he would have been twirling it all throughout the ALO arc).

At the same time, however, I also understand that it isn't my place to bash people for enjoying it or anything like that.

Hipster 101, Don't admit you're a hipster, deny it at every turn

I consider haters to be band wagon hipsters

except for maybe those who just don't care

I notice that there is a lot of people that just don't like Sword Art Online and i don't exactly know why. I thought it might be the whole "it's to popular" but that's not really a good reason to hate any anime. Could someone tell me why there is so much hate towards S.A.O?

mainly because of the main girl... becoming a damsel in distress. and their relationship ruining other ships.

I think its simply because it's not their cup of tea. Of course you'll have some who hate it for hate's sake and others just riding the hate train but it's not that hard to believe that people could not like it.

Personally I like the anime even though I have some issues with it.

As many people have probably already said, SAO isn't hated in general. Its second arc ALO is hated because they got rid of any semblance of a good story, and replaced it with tentacle hentai innuendo, incest, and fan service. It just sucked.

I feel bad for everybody hating on SAO, even those that just hate ALO. Each arc was decent for what it was. I mean there was tentacle innuendo, incest and fan service all in the first arc, but somehow people managed through that just fine?

I believe it is because of the time skips and ALO.

Because the writing is pretty average overall and the characters are rather stereotypical. To be perfectly honest, the only reason it managed to get so much hype is for the animation and battle scenes. Why do you think the Big Three, Naruto, One Piece, and Bleach, got so big? It wasn't for their plots; they are all textbook Shonen, but none of them bring anything unique to the board, just a different way of presenting the same material.

It's really because people like the formula. It's a safe bet and it doesn't require that much effort to do. Basically, the formula follow these steps:

1) Introduce overpowered hero

2) Give him a villain in which he must struggle to get to

3) Use a large animation budget to make battle scenes look amazing

4) Give him overpowered abilities to deal with his foes

5) Make him struggle fighting the main antagonist, only for Deus Ex Machina to grant him the power to defeat him at the last second.

6) (optional) Save the girl/save the harem + happy ending

7) Repeat steps 2-5 over and over again (2-6, if there is any love interests are present) in contained sub arcs.

Now I will say, some shows will deviate from this formula slightly, but there are some series and especially some arcs that keep it purely textbook formula.

Now, think back to ALO for a minute; it follows the formula to the T:

1) Kirito goes into ALO

2) Kirito goes into ALO after learning that Asuna is still trapped in the game alongside a few hundred other players by some evil, unknown organization

3) Use of Magic and consistent battle scenes brings out best in animation budget

4) Kirito gains respect from other clans by wiping the floor with their enemies, creating an alliance

5) Make it difficult to fight Sugou Nobuyuki since he basically has admin status, only for Kayaba (the antagonist from the original SAO arc) to grant Kirito higher admin status (for some contradicting reason), allowing Kirito to destroy main antagonist

6) Kirito rescues Asuna and he and his harem live happily ever after...

6) ...Until the GGO arc comes around and said cycle begins once again.

And this is my argument. You can agree or disagree, but from a writer's perspective, this is what I have to say. I have nothing against people who like the formula; the formula exists for a reason. It makes excellent entertainment material, but story-wise, it is comparable to your average 5 paragraph essay: structured, but it doesn't take any risks. Some people like this consistency and it can be relaxing, but as for me, all I can say is it's entertaining, but that's about it.

I felt like Kirito was a somewhat shitty protaganist. He just annoyed me, not really sure why.
Besides that...

1)
The first arc started out really well, but the honeymoon episodes just felt out of place and the ending was completely illogical.

2)
The 2nd arc was terrible for a lot of reasons, the inclusion of magic, incest and rape being the main things that bothered me. The ending for it was just another, What the f*** moment.

3)
Gun Gale was the only arc that I actually expected to hate. But I ended up loving it, good pacing, great animation, the plot itself was actually good. Trap Kirito was somewhat hilarious, And Sinon is one of my favorite characters in recent memory. But why did we have to have another rapey ending - I just don't understand...

Overall I enjoyed Sword Art Online, it was good, I understand why it's popular. It's not low budget, the animation is fantastic, the characters are generally likable, and the plot is forgivable enough.

But If it weren't for Gun Gale pulling me back in, I probably would have lost interest after the 2nd arc.

Because it's a shitty harem pretending it's not a harem with an asshole MC and heroines that still love him after he acts like a total douche.
