Hi, I just finished watching fate/zero and was blown away. I never watched fate/stay night, but after finding out that unlimited blade works is being released by the same studio as fate/zero, I was extremely excited to start it.

The issue is that I have heard bad things about fate/stay night so I never bothered to watch the 2006 version, but now I am worried that if I don't watch it, I wont understand things in UBW.

tl;dr: Is fate/stay night necessary to watch before UBW?

No, it isn't. F/SN covers the first route of the Fate visual novel, but does so in a pretty poor way. You should be fine just watching UBW, considering the tweaks ufotable's giving it.

If you truly want to experience Fate, you could try the actual visual novel. That doesn't seem to be a popular option around here, but it's the best choice if you want the Fate route before UBW.

I just want to make sure that I can watch it without being confused.

Also, is it worth it to read the visual novel? is it THAT much better than the anime?

You should be fine, since Nasu seems to be filling in the blanks Fate would've left. It's hard to say for certain, though.

And yes, the visual novel is that much better than the anime. You don't NEED to read it, but it's a far better alternative to F/SN 06.

Basically after Fate Zero you enter fate stay night. Fate stay night has 3 different alternative route corresponding to 3 different heroine and their side of the story. There are

Fate Route - Saber story
Unlimited Blade Route - Rin Story
Heaven Feels - Sakura Story

The old fate stay night story focused on Saber story. The new Fate stay night focused on Rin story which is why she got episode 0. Overall each route has some similarity but branches off on their own different story as some character will get more development. In the old fate stay night, it focused on Saber so you did not really know Rin or her intention. With Unlimited Blade work, she will get develop more along side with Archer development although you will get very little development on Saber story. I can tell you that the beginning of the new Fate Stay night and the old one are suppose to be pretty much the same but Unfotable executed it far better.

It is worth it to read the visual novel though. Preferably the Realta Nua version. To be honest, I would put the visual novel above Zero. It is quite an experience.

This ^ basically, though I'd pull back the 'far better' bit at the end.

Okay so basically I can watch whichever one I want and I won't be confused?

(cause I have neither watched or read anything from the series but I've been really thinking about it lately, I just don't know where to start)

If you want to experience FSN like a real Star Wars fan (Original Trilogy -> Prequel Trilogy), read the visual novel, then read/watch Fate/Zero.

If you want to experience the series just by watching anime, Fate/Zero --> Fate/stay night Unlimited Blade Works. The studio is on record saying it structured the UBW anime to be a bit of a follow-up.

If you want to maybe understand some things after that, you can read the VN.

Mostly people will not recommend the 2006 DEEN anime due to poorer production values, dated animation, and some strange writing choices that added material from other routes...which is expected if you know DEEN's track record with visual novel adaptations like the When They Cry or Hakuouki titles.

Hi, you've received a lot of great info here, so you might be all set. However I did want to say that I'm closing the thread because we already have a thread covering this. Therefore if you have additional questions, you may want to visit: /forumtopic-866973/fateguide-everything-you-need-to-know-to-get-into-the-series
