Remember all those pictures of captions with stepping in shit and it shows Sword Art Online, or people telling you you have shit taste? Remember they are the majority cause of discussion for Sword Art Online? Does anyone else see the contradiction? Whenever a series gets popular, naysayers seem to jump out of trashcans to say negative things about a certain series. Why is Sword Art Online so popular? You can thank all those people who constantly call it shit that revive the discussions for it. They are giving the show free advertising and it reaches a lot of people. If you hate a show, why talk smeer it? It will only cause the show to remain popular. If you don't like a show, don't say anything and let the popularity dwindle. Thanks shit talkers for keeping Sword Art Online popular and relavent no matter how much time passes. Remember what Obi-Wan said to Darth Vader? “If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.”

I'm like one of the biggest defenders of the anime on Crunchyroll even though I'm far from a gung-ho fan, I only rise to defend the series because I think that the behavior of the hatred brigade goes against everything I stand for when it comes to anime and the whole reason I ever made an account and come here at all- which is to enjoy watching what you like.

There's been a long discussion about this in General Discussion today already. I just don't have the heart to step into another quagmire, so I'm not going to engage myself in this thread.

Its not a discussion. Its a "thank you" thread to the hate for making SAO so popular.

It can't be the hate. I mean, everyone hates Magical Warfare and no one talks about that anymore.

Yeah, with Naruto ending something mediocre needs to fill it's shoes. j/k I thought the first half was okay. Second half was trash and ruined any chances of me watching anymore in the future.

It's Kirito-kun's animal magnetism. Irresistible.

I mean I like SAO, but this concept applies to anything. It never matters if the content is objectively or subjectively good or bad, it only matters whether or not people talk about it. Advertising is advertising. Sooooo many terrible movies have made *bank* at the box office thanks to this phenomenon.

But, there's also the other side of the coin, and thats the fact that the critics are always the loudest. SAO is a well rated show, at least on crunchyroll. It just seems like a lot of people hate it because they are so loud about hating it. Again, free advertising.

Personally, I'll be the first to tell you that SAO is not a perfect show, but as dedicated anime watchers, we tend to fall into what I like to call "The Death Spiral of Elitism." Basically what I mean by that is that the more familiar with a specific category of thing you become, the higher your standards become proportionally.

Take this example: most of the world has never even SEEN a movie. Not a single movie. They would be amazed at the very concept of a moving picture. People who have seen movies know the best movies come out of Hollywood and will tend to watch those. The people who have seen a lot of movies might favor a certain director or studio and will only watch those. etc, etc. You look back at what you used to watch and you see how you can very easily become cynical about whatever it was.

I try to keep this part of human nature from spoiling how much I enjoy a series and I wish more people were reminded of that. Although to be perfectly honest, I'm as guilty of elitism as anyone. But at least I'm aware of it
