Just a random question out of curiosity to be honest, but I would really like to know what people's opinions on first episodes are.

I guess the reason I'm curious is because I love it when an anime can absolutely have my full attention on that very first episode! I really dislike the FINALLY getting hooked after episode 3-4 for some reason.

I know first episodes aren't series defining... I've seen very good animes which took an 3-5 episodes to have my full attention as well as animes with very good first episodes turn out to be complete shit. The times though that I come across an anime which hooks me on the first episode and turns out to be really good just make my day or night(because those usually get marathoned).

Would really just like to hear some peoples opinions on it lol

first impressions are important, but they shouldn't be the basis for evaluation.

First episodes are very important if you are going into a series blind, like during simulcasts for example. But like when I'm watching an "older" series I usually have faith in the reviewers that it will get better, if I'm not hooked by the first episode.

Some series, like Madoka Magica I just finished, don't have strong first episodes but get better later on. Others like Gurren Lagann go 100% right out of the gate. So first episodes aren't crucial to the overall experience, but yes they can determine whether or not you continue watching.

same here. I love amazing attention grabbing first episodes. but most of the times, the anime takes time to build excitement and enjoyment.

I believe the first and final episodes are the most important ones. the first one sets the tone for the series, and the final one either make or break a series...

set the bar as low as you can set it.

when the anime stays at the bar you will be less likely to rage.

First episodes really have to be like, BAM! This is what I am! They have to be basically like a mini-movie in and of themselves to get you hyped for the series. They are that important.

Take Blood-C for example, Blood-C sucks completely until about episode 6, then it is totally awesome for it's remaining 6 episodes. I initially dropped it though because the first 6 episodes were so slow and enigmatic.

The final episode however will leave you either loving or hating the writer, because now you have enjoyed the rest of the series and you want to have some good closure. If you get it, great happy ending. If not, blue balls.

For me, if a first episode is shitty, i can't give it 10/10 no matter how good it becomes later

I don't care if the first episode is crap, because I've noticed it usually doesn't matter. As long as the story has potential or the characters seem good, I'll probably be fine with a slow start. Besides, I can't even remember the first episode for most series I've watched.

I dont think the first episode is the decision maker for me... whether i want to keep watching or not. Starts at episode 5 for me..

Meh. Whether the first episode is horrible or not I'll still watch it. I need to finish the first episode to see the rest of it. Sometimes, some people expect a lot of an anime series from the first episode to everything else. It's crazy how they'll set their expectations so high like that.

This here.

The first episode is very important, but the second episode of exposition and the 3rd for informed knowledge are most important!

Watch the opening 3 episodes of Kill la Kill to see the proper pacing of Action>Exposition>Informed Action properly..

Most anime will follow this 3-set rule with variations. Fate/Stay Night adds an episode 0 but still uses 2 as expo and 3 as Berserker action.

So yeah, first episode is super super important.

While its always nice to get hooked into something right away, sometimes a first episodes quality can only be evaluated after you have watched a bit more. Sometimes a bit of set up work is required in order for you to appreciate something, and I think all too often people say something like "It starts off slow, but then at episode X it gets awesome", without realizing consciously that sometimes the reason things get awesome in the first place is because of a well set up introduction.

Don't get me wrong some series start out 'meh' in a way that doesn't actually help things along, however there are also shows that when you watch them again you see the beginning in a whole new light sometimes in a way that makes you go 'Holy shit. Was all this stuff in here the first time I watched this?' or makes you realize how well of a job the storyteller did giving you an attachment to the characters without you realizing it. These stories are often my favorites because they give some real re watch value aside from the overall quality alone.

What I look for most in a first episode is the sense of a good story to come and a desire to find out what it is. I am perfectly happy with a slow, prequel-like first episode - maybe because I was a big fantasy reader before I got into anime.

Having said that, an action packed thrill ride of a first episode is never a bad thing, but if I don't feel a good story forming after a few more I have a tendency to drop a series.

Where a first episode really comes in handy is when it shows you that you absolutely will not like a show, and don't have to bother watching any more to find out. That can also be a good thing.
