I try to go into no series with no expectations what so ever. Some have captivated me from the beginning like The Irregular at Magic High and some like Attack on Titan lost me before the end of the first episode. For those that fall in between the two ends I try to give 2-3 episodes before deciding if I wish to continue or to cut my losses and move on.

I like to go in blind when watching anime. Even with anime I drop I never drop them after the first episode alone but it does set expectation and interest in if I want to continue watching it.

Same. After that, if I'm still not sold on the 3rd episode, I will drop it and never look back.

If I'm going into a series already on the fence, then a poor first episode can absolutely tank the series for me. If, however, I like the concept/art/concept/etc. but don't like the first episode then I'll give a series a few episodes before I decide if I'm going to continue watching or not.

So, yeah, a good first episode can be important, but it's not as important as the whole of the series being good. A great first episode won't keep me watching the series if after 3 or 4 episodes I'm left going "Well, that first episode sure was pretty good..."

set the bar as low as you can set it.

when the anime stays at the bar you will be less likely to rage.

This is pretty much the only solution to watching Anime in peace.
Even when hyped, be sure to have the bar as low as your hype allows you.
Do not be positive.

I usually go with the 3 Episode Rule. However, for some series I don't make it that far (only episode 1 or 2) and some I keep up after that. Some anime start out really promising (like Mahouka) and turn into shit at the end, or at least decline significantly, so a good first 3 episodes aren't always a reliable indicator. On the other hand, some series don't start to get really good until after the 3rd episode. For example, Steins;Gate was excellent overall but had a REALLY slow start, and my favorite anime TV series, Fate/Zero, doesn't really suck you in until episode 4.
That said, a good first episode is important. The first episodes for Madoka Magica, Kill La Kill, Attack on Titan and Rage of Bahamut pulled me in right away. So, it's really a case-by-case basis.
