My favorite dubs are Yu Yu Hakusho, FLCL, and Fullmetal Alchemist.

I used to prefer dubs but now I'd rather watch a show with subs instead. Not saying I wont give the dub a chance though.

Is there any specific reason that people hate on english dubs? I understand that some dubs are far inferior, in my experience at least 65% of dubs aren't good at all, but that still leaves 35% for a dub to be good. I've seen people get called "inferior anime fans" simply because they prefer the dub versions of some animes to sub version, and really its just unnecessary. Its too a point that before even giving a dub a chance people will say "its awful" without having watched it, or if a trailer comes out, they base the whole dubs quality on up to 2 minutes of viewing. I can't be alone on here in saying that dubs aren't awful, some shows have better dubbed versions than sub I find, like Cowboy Bebop and Death Note. If you're a dub hater, please answer this question. What criteria makes a dub bad?

For some it's enough that it is a Dub. There are hipsters among anime fans who honestly believe that one kind of translation is more pure more 'true to the source material' than another. Dubs are bad for making anime accessible to the rest of us unwashed masses.

I'm not a big fan of dubs, but the "Baccano!" dub is some of the best voice acting I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Seriously, how could you not love this guy?

I tend to be weird on how I view anime on DVD/Blu-ray. If there is a dub I watch the dubbed version only first. This way I can concentrate on the artwork, animation and overall story line. The 2nd viewing will be dubbed AND subbed. That way I can see what the Japanese meant and what it as translated into. Finally I will, if I really like the show/movie, watch it subbed only to hear the original Japanese voice actors. Last night I dug out my 1st season Ranma 1/2 dvds and watched the first one. I guess my ear for Japanese has improved a lot since they no longer sounded like angry hyperactive chipmunks. But there are some truths I have discovered for myself. 1) I don't give a rat's rectum if the VA says Japanese Pizza instead of Okonomiyaki. 2) I have a fiery burning hate for bad dubs or stupid dubs. Two examples spring to mind: High School DXD is one. Why? They made it far more vulgar than it needed to be. I'm no super prude but that was just to damn dumb to let slide. Yes, I am aware of the need to synchronize with the lip flaps, but this was way to much over the top. The 2nd example is more of a DUMB dub more than anything else. In Vandread episode 6: What A Wonderful World: A Japanese lady sang . can you guess what? . .What A Wonderful World in ENGLISH. But in the dubbed version the song was replaced. This is bad because the original artwork/animation was choreographed to the music. So the replacement song made no sense compared to the images being shown. I fired off a bewildered WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY e-mail to Funimation. Turns out it wasn't Funimation's fault. They bought the rights from a 3rd company and that company changed the song. They had to use what they bought the license for. Finally I leave one further thought. The quality of the subtitling depends on the quality of the translator. Just because it is subbed doesn't mean it is more accurate. Personally, if I started a subtitling business than I'd hire nothing but Nisei (or the more current version of the Nisei) to do all the work. Why? Japanese will be spoken almost entirely at home, but in education, out with friends and jobs English will be spoken.

Now a random picture to apologize for the wall of text.

You do understand and if you watch many anime raw with no subtitles in Japanese, most of the time the dialog dose not match the mouth movements.

Maybe, but if it was from the far past it might not come up with search on topics. Frankly the search function here leaves a lot to be desired.

This again... I hate dubs because they don't sound genuine. I want the culture of Japan to flourish within the series, the VAs are almost always superior and no newly released series is ever dubbed.

It really doesn't feel like it was all that long ago since it was last commented on. A week or two at the most.

Dubs offer people an opportunity to complain.

People never miss an opportunity to complain.
