The culture of Japan? What does this even mean

Things like this are usually said by people who don't have much exposure to the language or culture outside of anime or dramas. There are tons of anime with bad Japanese voice acting. Lots of anime also take place in fantasy setting or places that are clearly not Japan, so the culture argument doesn't hold up well. One of my Japanese professors in undergrad was talking about American Anime culture and how American/English speaking fans are often unable to tell good from bad. I can't remember the series, but she gave a specific example of a series that is loved by the English speaking community, but is universally panned by Japanese fans for the terrible voice acting.

DBZ has some of the most ill fitting voices I have ever seen. Goku sounds like a kid even though he is forty years old. Gohan keeps the same seiyuu from his introduction at 5, until the end of the series when he is a grown man, she doesn't even try to make him sound older.I don't like Yugi's seiyu either.Good and bad actors exist in both languages. I hate to break it to you, the Japanese don't have the monopoly on good voice acting.

You do understand and if you watch many anime raw with no subtitles in Japanese, most of the time the dialog dose not match the mouth movements.

Not most of the time, some times

My collections stretches back to the late 60's. It has improved over time, but in the 70's- late 90's they barley match up.

That only works if the series is set in Japan or has Japanese characters. Something like Baccano or FMA really don't have much Japanese cultural stuff. I've actually always been sort of interested in the idea of a really well done German dub of FMA. Baccano is a show that I don't think there's any reason to watch it in Japanese instead of English. It's a show set in Depression era US and has a fantastic dub, complete with accents and everything.

Hellsing Ultimate is another example, Alacard may be voiced by my favorite Japanese actor, but the English dub is to me the way this show should sound.

It all depends. Like any work dub actors can be good or bad. Series such as FMA, FMA:B, Code Geass, Steins;Gate, Sora no Otoshimono and many more have proven that dubs can be as good if not better than subs.

Do remember that there are a lot of immature people that hate dubs because as they say "well anime is japanese so why translate it!" Lol. I hope they know that anime is translated to something like 100 different languages. I have listen to Spanish (both Mexican and South American versions), English and Portuguese dubs of many series (DB, DBZ, DBGT, Saint Seiya, Captain Tsubasa, Pokemon, etc.) and it's up to the user/client/watcher to decide what is best.

Personally, I've noticed that whenever I watch an anime in whatever language first it tends to "stick" as the reference so therefore when comparing it's always going to be either better or worse and let's face it before 2005 most English dubs were utterly horrible (I'm talking about you Sailor Moon and Clannad!!!) but now the quality has increase and it's clearly noticeable when watching masterpieces like Steins;Gate which dare I say actually sounded better dub than sub.

I watched the first episode of Baccano the other night and tried the dub because people say that's one of the better ones due to accents and whatnot. The little girl assistants voice wasn't very good I thought but most of the others were alright. Might watch it in Japanese again to see which I think I want to go with.

I think it's alot easier to dislike an English dub since a native English speaker can tell when it's forced... Maybe? I dunno, English voice work just doesn't sound as natural to me consistently, but that's not to say Japanese voice work is infallible by any means.

Weaboos think Japanese is the master race, thats all. Because they don't even speak it, its different and its better. Its to the point that its hipster. Its funny cause some Japanese dubs are shit but weebs eat it up cause they know nothing about the culture. I prefer english dubs.

Why did this thread have to get bumped?

All that will do is attract the most obnoxious people of this website.

Don't look at me.

It was already on the front page, whoever bumped deleted, probably knew that and was trying to.

The way Japanese dialogue is usually written sounds unnatural when translated into English. There are exceptions of course. In fact for some reason I think pretty much every Final Fantasy thing that has voice acting sounds better in English. It's really odd.

It physically hurts to hear romcoms in English though. The cultural difference, the idiosyncrasies, you would never hear anyone EVER say anything like that in English out side this particular situation. It becomes extremely difficult for me to suspend disbelief.

There are quite few dubs that are far superior to the subs imo.

Hellsing-WAY Better

Black Lagoon-WAY Better

Yu Yu Hakusho

DBZ-Almost impossible to watch it subbed for me.

Baccano

Cowboy Bebop

Rurouni Kenshin

Trigun

Ergo Proxy

Darker Than Black-....Could be debatable.
