Note about spoilers: I think that content from the visual novel and Fate/Zero should be fine to discuss without spoilers; extended information, from sources like Fate/Hollow Ataraxia or similar works not available in English should probably be spoilered if they are plot-relevant.

I'm hoping to make this a thread where people who have read the visual novel, or are familiar enough with it, feel comfortable discussing content that's beyond the scope of just the anime, in a discussion about the anime.

Yes this is good.

Anything Fate/Stay Night or Fate/Zero related is all good, but outside of that it should be spoilered.

Can you edit a title to a thread? Like I said, I haven't started a thread on this forum before. A kindly mod at least put a "Expect Spoilers" sub-header.

Ya, that's good enough. Most people will see the sub-header and if they don't they'll most likely read your first post and know what this thread is about.

Shouldn't this be in the manga forum?

The main source for this is a VN, not a manga. There is already a (tiny) thread for the VN in PC Gaming, but this discussion is comprehensive in including the anime series, movies, etc. Since it's all encompassing and based, on what was happening in the Unlimited Blade Works thread, will include a lot of cross comparisons and direct discussion of the anime adaptions, the Anime forum is a fine place for it.

Was kinda feeling bad discussing things in the home thread for UBW since a lot of it was based on the other routes, and what that meant for the overall narrative themes (and thus needed lots of spoiler tags), so I'm glad there is a thread like this because I hate it when those topics take over home-topics in other threads.

Missed the part where it was talking about the movies and other properties, just thought it was for the VN at first.

I would say, "use your judgement", but this *is* the internet.

Ya that's what I was saying..... Then people won't wander in here and accidentally get spoiled.

I've added "Expect Spoilers" to the thread description. If imaginarycreatures clarifies what's reasonable in terms of using spoiler tags, I think that should cover it.

I want to read this thread even though I haven't seen much of anything, because I don't mind being spoiled and I was finding the discussion in the other thread to be pretty interesting. (More interesting than I've found the bits of the shows I've seen so far )

I'm with Loomy and Lorreen, seems like there's enough to let people know that there'll be spoilers, but then again, I kinda missed it myself.....though that was before the sub-tag.

Not sure if one can edit the title after posting, never tried it myself but assumed one could.

That was sorta the problem we were running into. Since the last episode, we were having a long and (in my opinion) interesting discussion regarding the portrayal of the servants in the battle compared to the visual novel. Unfortunately, explaining peoples' different opinions of the characters' motivations, behavior, agendas and actions involves discussing not only that scene from the visual novel, but many different parts of the visual novel, and, to a lesser extent, Fate/Zero. It was, to be honest, probably extremely hostile to people unfamiliar with the VN. I mean, the anime hasn't even mentioned who Archer, Saber and Berserker are, and describing if their actions were true to their characters is impossible if you can't discuss the characters themselves.

Or in the previous episode; the question of how much exposition is "important" to the plot is impossible if you can't discuss why the exposition is important in the first place.

Anyway, after seeing an entire page of spoiler-tags, I could kinda see this was getting to be a problem, and loreen's comment kinda proved the point.

Due to circumstances, Archer's stats are kind of bad. I don't know if Lancer mentioned this, but his Master is having him just observe other Servants rather than seriously fight them, that's why he asked Saber if they could just call their fight a draw.

It's going to take me a long time to get used to Illya's voice. She has the same seiyuu as always, but she just sounds so different.

Also, the Master who summons the Heroic Spirit has an influence on their power levels. That's why Berserker's stats are so high; not only is he a demi-god (and thus a high level Heroic Spirit), but his master is Ilya, who's probably the world's most powerful living magus. Conversely, Saber is relatively low because Emiya is an inexperienced magus; in Fate/Zero she was much stronger. Lancer's a poor sap that gets stuck with the worst luck in every route; I guess he kinda wins one battle, if you can call that a win.

I always wonder how individual stats work out. I understand that aside from how powerful a Servant was when they were alive, their Master, and their fame really goes into determining how powerful they are when they are summoned, but sometimes some stats seem just to be random, like Saber having D-Rank Luck with Kiritsugu. I guess that's not a huge deal, anyways.

Some of it is a bit random, I'm sure. I mean, it isn't like you ever see a moment when Lancer's endurance really gets shown. Or Caster's strength, for instance. Though, if you think about it, it isn't like King Arthur had super-awesome luck in the end, and Kiritsugu certainly didn't, either. Well, I mean, I guess Kiritsugu lived, so I guess in that sense, he didn't have the *worst* luck, but other than that, things didn't work out for him.

I just want to say that I think it's pretty awesome that this one single battle has a lot of depth to it if you look closely. The fact that there's so much strategy, character motives/behaviors, plot points, and other major foreshadows in one battle and the fact that we can an in depth discussion about it, speaks for itself if you ask me.
