Observations From The Spine
Posted 10/27/14
Two days a week I have a 2-hour break, and I take this time to eat my lunch really quick and go to Barnes And Noble. I stand in the manga section and read. As of now, I'm devouring/reading Death Note, I'm up to vol. 4 and it's almost insane how great it is.

But that's besides the point of this. In the 2 hours I stand there and read, I've started to see a few things.

1. Who goes there
2. Who stops to read something.
3. What people say when they see manga.

Number one-

The age range I see most is roughly 13 years old to mid-late 20's, save for some older people who are lost and can't find the cookbook section. Every race, religion, etc, but when it comes to teenagers more so African Americans (which I really applaud).

Number two-

It's not very common to see people actually pick one off the shelf and finger through it. Sometimes they'll take one off, but it's either buy or just look with most (not me though )

Number three-

99% of the time it's about one of the Big 3. No, actually it's about 100%. I hear stuff from...

"Oh dude don't you like anime?" "Yeah, but not this stuff."

or

"Why's it look so weird?"

or

"Oh wow they have Dragonball Z. Do they have Avatar?"

or my favorite

"What is this???"

Keep in mind these observations I make are made while I'm standing there reading. I don't talk to anybody or anything, and it's just been really interesting to see firsthand some exposure and opinions about manga and anime. I sometimes wanna stop reading and say "Hey if you like _____ you should read _____" but I figure it's not really my place to say anything...Maybe I'll start though. They can hire me as the manga section connoisseur

So from what I gather, there's a pretty big age range, and the interest of most if not all people who aren't like me is in the bigger animes (DBZ, One Piece, Naruto).

Yea, it's only normal I would say.
Naruto, bleach, one piece and DBZ are among the most well known animes (also pokémon etc ofcourse if you count that in).
My first anime that wasn't aired in my country was Naruto aswell, but the way I see it is a window that opened more doors for me.
I still watch Naruto, but there are many, many other animes/mangas that are less known and much better (which everyone here knows). But it's just the mainstream, and you should actually walk up to them and say "hey try this aswell", you would help them and do them a big favor in the end if they like it.

I'm not sure. I never sat around at book stores for very long. I'm usually all business when I'm there. Interesting observations.

I go there a lot, but I don't linger. Browse a bit, grab what I want, get the hell out. Bearded twenty year old who could pass as thirty lingering in that section? Bad news.

I thought we've seen the back of Death Note. i hope we can let it die out now.

This topic doesn't really pose a question, so I am not quite sure how to reply. I have never been in a manga section before and cannot really admire the observations you have conducted. I will instead applaud them anyways!

It does in the city that never sleeps. I guess there's no such thing as Barnes and Nobles in Connecticut?

Whenever I go to Barnes and Nobles for manga i usually shy away till the one or two people residing there leave, but they mostly sell random volumes of the manga that was popular a few years back, they have a lot of omnibus* style manga books though.

*Omnibus: Kinda like multiple volumes of a single series bound in one cover.

Most of the people who linger around the Barnes and Noble manga section around here are high school girls.
