So.....I've stumbled upon a waifu art trade. A friend of mine, who is Japanese, has Saber from F/SN as his waifu. We made a deal. He sends me Sakura pics he finds, I'll send him Saber ones.

Why is this a thing? Why are waifus a thing? Why do humans get so easily obsessed with things, even if they're fictional?

Well, it's better than not being able to advance in a relationship at all if you're busy or whatnot.

Never understood the concept of waifus, really. The closest I have to one is Rin, but even then she's just my favorite girl.
Isn't it a known fact among otakus that 2D > 3D?

Personally I've never understood the whole waifu thing. I mean, I can understand some good ole fashioned obsession, but some of the things I've seen seem to go beyond even that.

I don't really get it either. I mean, to each their own, but even when I've come across characters I've really liked (and believe me, I have) I've never taken it to that level.

Well...I'm a straight woman, so I have "husbandos". And I do mean plural, and I see nothing wrong with it. I don't have any dakimakura, so I can't haul them out in public. But I honestly see nothing wrong with fantasizing over a cartoon character. The odds of me sleeping with the animated character is probably about the same as sleeping with a real life (if it exists) equivalent.

That being said, I buy artwork, so yeah, I and many other people spend crazy amounts of money on production artwork and artist sketches of our waifu/husbandos. I've spent some stupid money on douga and rilezu from "Hakuouki". I love being able to say that I own that character in that pose.

I think, as long as you keep your fantasy in check. It's absolutely healthy. So, drooling over pics of the character is great, but going on a honeymoon with your Love Plus waifu is not healthy.

Because sexualized media doesn't cause men to treat women like objects. It causes men to treat objects (i.e. drawings of pretty girls) as women.

I agree. I think loving anime characters/fictional characters is good and well when kept in check. But if people don't keep it in check, then it looks bad for them, and makes them look so sad.

It also makes the anime watching community look bad.

Eh, that in itself doesn't make anime fans look too bad. I'm fine with it. I mean, people have loved fictional characters in sci-fi and comic books before anime was big. What makes the anime community look really bad is the amount of people who love lolis and have lolis as waifus. What does a lot to make the anime community look bad is how Japan puts out anime and manga and video games with lots of sexualized lolis, or even shotas, like with stuff like the notoriously bad Boku no Pico series.

Be careful, women can smell desperation.
