I heard it is best to turn off your computer once everyday. I usually turn off my computer before I go to sleep, every night.

I heard it isn't a good idea to keep your computer open for several days at a time because that will shorten its life span. Similarly, turning off your computer on and off several times a day will shorten its lifespan as well.

So what frequency should you turn off you computer at in order to maximize your computer's lifespan? Should I turn off my computer once everyday to maximize its lifespan?

It shouldn't really cause any problems if you leave your computer on for long periods of time, but because of the power consumption I usually turn mine off every night and whenever I stop using it for more than an hour or two.

I typically leave my Linux box on for about 6 months at a time.

At home I like to keep the computer off when I'm not using it to keep electricity costs down. At work, however, I keep it on all the time.

Every night, I empty the internet cache, run a full computer virus scan and finally, shut it down.

There's no reason to keep your computer running when it's not in use. I've never had an HDD break on me and I've regularly used PC's for ten years or more with regular shut downs. They used to design the hardware on PC's to actually break after a certain amount of times powering on, but those types of shenanigans don't occur these days.

I'm using an old Pentium 4 right now that's attached to my TV for streaming from 2006. It has 518 days of power on time and I've restarted it 6,627 times. With all that the hard drive is still in the same condition it was when I got it.

As far as staying on all the time...I don't like to keep my computers running when I don't use them so I couldn't tell you if that's a good idea or not. I feel it would be unnecessary power usage and wear and tear on my fans.

Pc's can last for decades if taken care of, but some things like a HD motor can die out one day.

I leave my pc on most of the time, give it a few restarts a week and turn it off when I wont be near my pc for more then 8+ hrs or so. If i leave town, i unplug it from the wall.

My pc i built in 2008, runs perfect with a few upgrades, OS, vid, memory, and another SSD hd.

You don't actually lose that much life by turning a computer off and on again; yes, it puts some wear on the hard drive since it has to load everything from there again, but the computer probably would have just as many reads from normal use (without rebooting) in that same time. If you're not a power user that needs the computer on all the time (e.g. for a server), turning it off overnight is beneficial because it reduces wear on fan bearings and reads from any of your drives.

Really though, it's perfectly okay to turn your computer off when you're not using it.

I turn it off every night before I go to bed. My computer is a little noisy, and I want to cut down on the electricity bill.
