I turn off my computer each night. The fact that it's in my room, I wouldn't be able to sleep because the noise of the fan would annoy the crap out of me. Even though the fan is super quiet, I would need dead silence to sleep. Also whenever I leave my house, I would shut it off.

If I know I'm going to be gone for no longer than an two hours, I would keep it on standby. Any longer, I shut it off.

I always turn off both PC and laptop (fully shut down, not sleep or hibernate) prior to going to bed every night.

Meh, why wasting a computer turned off when it could be downloading and rendering.
Never. Only on mandatory updates. when I am done I leave it in C2 state I guess.

I turn off the computer when I will not be on it for awhile. So if I don't want to use it but think I'll be back on it in something like 30 minutes or an hour, I'll usually leave it on. However, if I don't plan to use the computer until a few or more hours later (and I'm done using it for the time being), I'll just shut it off. If I use the computer before going to bed, I'll turn it off when going to bed. I don't torrent much these days, but if I torrent a big file or multiple big files, I'll leave the computer on for hours at a time (turning it off when I feel the need for it) until the downloads are complete.

I turn off both my laptop and computer at the end of every day. Especially my desktop or i'll be the one paying the bill for all the electricity used.

My main rig I turn off (or put to sleep) every night just to keep the room cool and cut power use. I have another that acts as a firewall/router and it stays on 24/7 and hasn't been restarted in months. The rest are just powered on when needed.

What?

I turn it off when I'm not using it... Who leaves it on if they're not downloading anything and is afk?

I've been leaving mine on 24/7 for years. The only time it gets a restart is when I get a windows update. I'll sometimes do a restart after around a week.

never, actually. why?

heat. the chips get pretty hot,and expand. then u turn them off, they get cold, and shrink. the expanding and contracting is what casues cracks in the chips, causing problems that will eventually lead to total failure.

but in reality, you'll dump the computer before you kill it from heating/cooling cycles.

Does accidentally unplugging it with my foot about once a week count?

I build my own PCs. My previous machine lasted me ten years, and that's only because I built a new one (In 2011) to replace it, because the video graphics specs for games exceeded the abilities of my (already upgraded) 10 year old machine (back in 2011). I left it on 24/7, and only shut it off to do maintenance.

Same as my current machine - which I built in 2011, and upgraded earlier in 2014. I leave it on 24/7, and only shut it off to do maintenance. I expect it'll last me until video game specs exceed it, but that probably won't happen until at least 2018 (maybe 2019).
