Post Reply How often should you turn off your computer?

Actual shutdown is very rare. There is no reason to do so. It goes into sleep mode whenever I step away from it for more than 5 minutes or so though. Restarts only happen when needed from maintenance scans and updates though as well.

My computer has Windows 8.1! So I turn my computer off every time it crashes! (About twice a day.)

Linux machine: Whenever I decide it's time to remove some dust or replace some components. (Usually cooling related)

Windows/Gaming machine: Other than the occasional reboot (Usually update related), I turn the machine off when I leave my home for more than a couple of days or when I perform a hardware adjustment/upgrade.

I really don't understand why Windows crashes so often for some people, I'm running 8.1 on both my PC and my laptop and it runs as smooth as any other windows I've ran on my machines since Windows 2000.
And especially my gaming PC is being pushed to its limits more than occasionally, all issues I have had related to the stability of my OS were caused by me tinkering with different OC settings.

The short of it is it stalls trying to update Onedrive. Meaning I can't leave it alone for more then five minutes or it crashes. I could put it in sleep mode but sometimes it is better to turn it off.

Well because it's not a Server that hosts anything I shut it down any time I leave my house or go to bed.

I have 3 machines. One is a desktop pc with windows that is my media center, the second is a linux laptop that's my sharemonkey, and the third is a windows laptop that is my productivity machine. It travels back and forth to work with me every day and I also use it for e-mail, surfing the web, chatting and media viewing. The only time my machines get turned off is when the power goes out. The same with restarting unless it's maintenance related.

Other than saving on the electric bill, there is very little reason to completely power down your system. My previous media pc died a few months ago. I had it for 7 years and it had all of the original components. I could have probably reused most of it but it was so old I decided to just buy a new rig. Some people like to say it's pointless to keep your personal computer on 24/7 and I agree that you should turn it off if you're not using it. The thing is, there are services running on all 3 of my systems 24/7, which is why I never turn them off. There is very little difference from someone's desktop or laptop computer than there would be a dedicated server, other than software and configuration. Why is it surprising that people prefer to keep their machines on? For businesses this is normal so why not at home.

I set mine to turn off if not in use after a half hour, saves on electricity..... but besides that I think by the time my computer were to die on me is about the time the industry would be advanced enough again that it would warrant a new laptop anyway,
