I turn my computer off completely when it's not in use. I live in a hot climate and the cost of electricity is high, so keeping a room at a temperature that a computer has no chance at overheating is not practical. With the exception of the kitchen appliances and the freezer, everything in the house is kept turned off and/or unplugged.

My Desktop I turn off every night (it's in my living room.)
When it's on, the computer will flash blue at an interval of every-few-seconds, which is annoying.
It also has a habit of making this vibrating noise (and it's really irritating.)
I would not be happy waking up to the vibrating noise (walls are super thin.) and I wouldn't be surprised if my Mom sees the light from her door.

My laptop, is well, it doesn't really work anymore, kind of, the screen constantly blacks out, and the charger won't work for some damned reason (so the battery life was at like 30% last I looked at it). But for some reason, it hasn't stopped functioning yet, maybe it's only when I touch it that it decides to malfunction :/.
Of course, it's also over 5 years old >.>...

I shut my computer down and close it, but it boots up again so when I want to use it, it's on. Well, my computer's old anyway, not like it would last much longer..

Usually before I go to bed. Recently I've been doing it less because of time issues.

Don't think my computer has turned off other than for maintenance reasons in the 5 or so years I have had it.

I put mine into sleep, but that's because I need to keep it at least in idle because I sometimes randomly wake up and can't sleep so it's easy to turn it on.
I generally turn off my computer when I'm out of the house for 1 or more days at a time. Like if I'm gone for a few days, fully shut down.
If I go to sleep, put it in sleep. But, that's just me.

Oh, and don't forget to dust it out every now and again. Dust is the leading cause of computer problems :3

I put my computer to sleep every night, but never shut it down unless I am tinkering with something. I restart it every so often, but vary rarely shut the computer down.

As for computer life, I think you are worrying a bit much. Use it, put it to sleep, and wake it up in the morning when you need it. Restart when necessary.

If you are concerned, buy an external hard drive or two (they are cheap) and keep redundant backups of the info on your computer.

I only keep it on overnight if something big is downloading / updating. Otherwise I turn it off every night. I have an SSD so it boots in about 7 seconds. Lol why do some of you leave it on for months.

In the cooler months I run BOINC ie. [email protected] or PrimeGrid and I have a team http://www.aoz1.org/AniAtHomeIndex. It keeps the place warm and I find out how well my computer builds are. I have had some of my PCs running for two years 24/7 except for updates.

I remember that it was a good idea to restart Windows XP every now and then for a while but the last few years before support was discontinued I had no problems with it....

About the only thing I have noticed is that a SSD solves a lot of problems especially if you run Windows Vista.
Make sure you have a good power supply! Overkill is a good thing with power supplies. I have a Raidmax that was powering my folk's PC for over ten years and it still works.
I've had Coolmax power supplies die in the space of a few weeks.
Cooler Master and Antec seem to be about the toughest ones I've used.

I have a couple of Gigabyte mother-boards with Intel Core2Quads that have been running the better part of six years without any problems. I have a DFI LanParty Mobo that is eight years old and it still runs really well. It's an AMD 4800+ dual core Athlon. DDR2 memory *LOL*
