There are some real basics to story writing that we can learn from nursery rhymes. My dad had a million of them.

Tonight, my house has been attempting to control bedbugs that showed up in a couple rooms. I made a joke about needing some spiders. Then, I remembered a nursery rhyme that my dad would sing to my brother and I, but I must have only been three or four. I wonder if anyone else remembers a nursery rhyme that was particularly fun for them, and if the can see any influence on their writing today.

There was an old lady who swallowed a fly,
I don't know why she swallowed a fly,
Perhaps she'll die

There was an old lady who swallowed a spider,
It wriggled and wiggled and tickled inside her,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why she swallowed a fly,
Perhaps she'll die

There was an old lady who swallowed a bird,
How absurd, to swallow a bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why she swallowed a fly,
Perhaps she'll die

There was an old lady who swallowed a cat,
Fancy that, to swallow a cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why she swallowed a fly,
Perhaps she'll die

There was an old lady that swallowed a dog,
What a hog, to swallow a dog,
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why she swallowed a fly,
Perhaps she'll die

There was an old lady who swallowed a cow,
I don't know how she swallowed a cow,
She swallowed the cow to catch the dog,
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why she swallowed a fly,
Perhaps she'll die

There was an old lady who swallowed a horse,
She's dead, of course

This was brilliantly accompanied by physical queues to keep us singing along, to make sure we remembered the progression of the story.

The fly was a poke a poke to the stomach, the spider was tickling, the bird was short burst of pats on the tummy. For the cat and the dog and the cow, he would bounce us on his knees a little bit more each time. I don't think he did anything for the horse except put is down so he could carry on with what he was doing.

I'm going to be an uncle soon. I've got a few years before this will apply, but I'm glad I remembered it.

If there are any stories or songs you remember being especially fun in your earliest development or later, please share them.
