Street harassment.
Posted 10/30/14
So I just recently became aware of something going on and it involves this video here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1XGPvbWn0A

I wanted to know the opinions of those here on CR about it and I am going to leave it open to more than just guys calling out to girls because I know girls will call out to guys/girls and guys will also call out to guys they find attractive as well. Do you consider it wrong and harassment to call out to someone you find attractive on the street? If you do see it as harassment, what would you find acceptable in how to approach someone you find attractive out in public? If not, how do you view that kind of behavior and attention? Annoying? Flattering? Or do you just see it as people being stupid and ignore it completely?

I probably shouldn't be making a thread right now with how tired I am but whatever. If I missed an angle that it could be viewed from feel free to just speak your mind about it.

I find it to be rude and in poor taste. Even if you might mean well, complimenting a complete stranger on their looks just out of the blue comes off as creepy. That's how I see it at least. Some people probably disagree with me.

I don't really understand why people do that sort of thing. Is simply approaching an attractive woman and having a normal conversation really that much more difficult than shouting obscenities at her?

Well, it's not always verbal but it's for sure awful and disgusting. I hope people wise up eventually.

I'd personally find it creepy and strange (kind of makes me glad I'm not attractive).

I never go to public places alone for this reason... People are disgusting.

tbh, not many of those cat calls were offensive, some people even said god bless, and some just greeted her.. i don't see the big deal

i have never witnessed a cat call happen in all my life, it does not happen that often,. she was just very attractive not all women look like that

her jaw did look slightly masculine though. could be trap haha.

- Woman seen harassed on NYC streets in video gets rape threats
- http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/10/30/us-usa-new-york-harassment-idUSKBN0IJ29Z20141030

(Reuters) - A woman featured in a video in which she is harassed more than 100 times on New York City's streets said on Thursday that she has received dozens of rape threats after the clip was posted on the Internet and watched widely.

The two-minute video posted on YouTube depicts 24-year-old Shoshana Roberts over a 10-hour period being accosted and at times followed by men who shout things such as "What's up beautiful" and "Nice" as she walked by in casual jeans and a black T-shirt.

In just two days, the recording has garnered more than 16 million views on the video-sharing website YouTube, shining a national spotlight on the problem of street harassment.

"Unfortunately I have sexual assault in my past, and unfortunately, I relive it when all of this comes up," said Roberts, an actress who said the recording depicts a typical day for her. "Luckily I've built up a much thicker skin, but I am very fearful."

Roberts said she has received numerous emails threatening rape and offering to help her commit suicide.

The only thing I don't get is why the video is asking for donations.
How is donating money going to stop people verbally harassing women?

I put off watching this video for the simple fact that I think it is ridiculous that you should not be decent in public. All this video showed me was A people can be creepy as shit, and B New York can be creepy as shit. I don't know what this lady hoped to accomplish here because lets be honest you can't make any of what these people did illegal, that freedom of speech thing though, and unless she was physically harassed this really will do nothing. Side note she probably could fuel some dumb rednecks ideas that black people are indecent because pretty much all of these men were black......so yea better editing should have been done to make the prevs look more diverse

I don't see anything wrong with complimenting strangers, it just needs to be appropriate.

I watched that video, and it was the most stuck up bitch ever.
I never knew that God Bless, you have a nice day was harassment. As well as have a nice evening.
I will never talk to women ever again if good morning is harassment.

You do realize she wasn't supposed to say anything to them right?
