Runescape is the closest thing that I've played to Sword Art Online. Runescape makes death scary by making you lose all your items. If you play old school runescape then you get a better experience of that fear of death. Plus Runescape lacks the class system so you get the freedom of levelling that you get in Sword Art Online. Unfortunately I have to go to bed soon or I'll be late for university again but I could play runescape with you if you want.

Also runescape has an ultimate ironman mode which makes it so that if you die then you lose your account - which is as close to SAO's permadeath as you can legally get.

Have you tried Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn?

It's considered one of the better ones, but you'll eventually be more interested in a MMO like Star Citizen when it gets closer to release.

Looks like you'll be waiting for something that's more a Massively Multiplayer Online Immersive Experience like Star Citizen. Just add Oculus Rift, since FFXIV is the best current-gen they got right now.

Have you tried Tera? I'm not one who really likes mmorpgs, but I have enjoyed playing Tera.

WoW is still the best MMO. All you have to do is get to max level and you will be sucked in

TBH.. most "anime themed" Mmorpgs suck major dick. They are mostly cash cows and P2W games.

I played FFXIV for about a year, and it was pretty good. Being a long time mmo fan, it didn't really feel the same as lets say, guild-wars 2, where everything was community based and the chat box was always active. FFXIV is a bit on the quiet side, you only see chatting in major cities.

I think FFXIV is probably the closest thing you are going to find that is similar to what you are looking for, being that its Final Fantasy, it is heavily anime and Japanese themed. It is also a triple A title, meaning it has amazing quality,

The only downside is the monthly subscription. But then again, that amount of money is nothing compared to the amount of content you receive; and given the FANTASTIC quality of the game.. its really cheap if you think about it.
