Okay what is the awe-inspiring appeal of Monogatari?

Instead of it carrying the show, I just feel like the unique surrealistic style is being wasted on a kind of derisive plot, bland characters, & a genre of anime the style doesn't really add anything to as a whole. I just finished the second episode of Nise, & it will certainly be the last. It is definitely upping its perv game. The interesting bits are still there. When Niseko & Araragi were playing the Game of Life, & started talking about his sisters & game money started needlessly flowing around them I thought "that's really damn cool looking", but I can tell it's not going to be enough to justify sitting through what I see to be perverted dribble & lack-luster romance. I took the praise at face value this time around because I didn't know anything about the show, & honestly couldn't without watching. Ah well, I gave it a shot.

You pretty much say everything i say about the series in a much nicer, accepting way so that's the reason i can't really add anything beneficial to your perception of the series. I just feel it's unique anime but most everything else about it is bad. Why it is praised simply for being unique, who knows. That is most likely the reason though. Also, Nise gets much more perverted as it goes on, so you would probably just finish it with the same frustrations i had.

Nise is the worst installment of the series, if you ask me.

Even Bake is rather...unrestrained in its storytelling, and the author clearly likes his own work quite a lot.

I like Bake as an experience, Nise as a memory, and Monogatari SS (which you haven't arrived at yet) as a beautifully written and produced work of art.

Bake and Nise got my attention. Monogatari SS pulls everything together and made me love the entire franchise.

"Why should I have to sit though all the crap to get to the good stuff?" you may be asking. I say the good stuff is good enough to be worth it, but it's not a requirement that you agree with me.

I assume just jumping to the second series will leave me more than a bit lost as far as the story?

But would he think SS is worth it if he doesn't think Bake is at least decent? It's not like the difference is from a 5 to a 10, and you're also really weak to deft writing in general which I don't think is enough of a hook by itself for most people. SS has got its weak points, too; it meanders around a lot depending on the arc, moreso than either Bake or Nise.

Not to mention I think Bake is better than SS to begin with, although that's largely a difference of evaluation.

I'm obsessed with Chronological order for my anime so I actually started with Nekomongatari Kuro, and that's what got me hooked on the series.

Bakemonogatari was sort of hit or miss with me. I immensely enjoyed Nisemonogatari because the sisters and Kaiki are my favorite characters. And Monogatari SS is just the epitome of everything good about the series for me. And finally Hanamonogatari definitely had its moments (EAT YOUR MEAT) but all in all I wasn't super impressed.

Anyways, at the end of the day there are going to be people who like it, and people who don't. It's just a matter of taste preferences. I happen to be in the category of loving it, but I'm not going to begrudge anyone if they have a difference of opinion on the matter.

Although I really love this show and think its great I think the op does have a point when he says that pretty much everyone says this is the best show, amazing, 10/10 and I can understand that it's certainly not everyone's cup of tea and not everyone can appreciate it and I think the op just wants to know why people appreciate it.

The franchise hit it's peak for me in the first season when they were laying on the ground looking at the stars. As far as I am concerned everything that has come after has just watered down the impact of that moment.

That said, I do enjoy the series as a whole -- but I am 100% OK with perverted harems, YMMV.

Monogatari is really the kind of show you don't wanna watch if you can't stand long dialogues and overly artsy stuff. It is niche even by anime standards so it's not the least bit surprising that Aniplex USA didn't dub it when they released it.

This thread made me want to actually post. There are plenty of people that find the show pretentious. Many arcs can just be summarized as so: Introduction for the mystery, dialogue, resolution with revealing how the word played nullified a lot of the dialogue. If you are the type that thinks things are profound by revealing details in short flashes on screen with written text - it could be for you.

Probably - which is a big appeal(?) - is it is made by Shaft. All of their shows has their own style, every single one with nearly the same thing. If you love it - you will love more of it. I guess that is the somewhat nice thing I can say about Monogatari. I personally thought they made Nisekoi less enjoyable with their head cranks, but to each their own.

Just watch Katanagatari

(Unless the long bouts of talking in Bake turned you off, that's the only similarity I've seen)
