It's tedious and it assumes the only reason why someone asked someone else a question is because they were too lazy to use google.
Naturally this was a thought process of a company that wants to encourage the use of their service as a higher priority than real people.

I personally only use it when the question is one that can be found in the first two or three results of a google search.

Well, depend on the use. If someone asks about, say, good animes from 2014 and you answer with this, it makes you kind of an ass. On the other hand when someone goes "Is Paris in France?"" this is very appropriate thing.

Redundantly helpful.

To be honest, I didn't even think it was rude...

I tend to find that those who use "look it up" or "let me Google that for you" tend to not want to be bothered to back up their claims.

That's usually the case, but I personally don't send a lmgtfy.com link unless I check that the answer can be found in the first 5 search results.

I don't use the phrase on others. I simply do so and respond with whatever I find for them. If ever used against me, I would probably shrug and thank them for their response, regardless of whether or not it was beneficial. Some actually need the help, either because they have difficulty narrowing down the information, or because they're unsure of what information would be most reliable.

It's just something that happens for me here. There are better ways to get questions out from under them. It really depends, but it's just not something that I need to use at all.
