So I got an email that my package shipped 2 days ago. It gave me a tracking number and linked me to the USPS website. Everywhere on the email it said it was being shipped from USPS, everywhere linked to the website. Everywhere was telling me to put in my tracking info at the USPS website. Every time I try to put in the info I'm met with this:

This is pretty normal for the first day an item has shipped before its processed fully, but by the end of the second day I was getting pretty suspicious. I kept coming back to see if it had updated, and on complete accident I just happened to google the tracking number instead of copy it (on chrome) which lead me here:

This is very clearly Fedex's website. At first, I thought that I just happened to share a Fedex tracking number with somebody else, but when I looked at the address, it was very clearly my package. Well on its way in its delivery process.

What I'd like to know is why the official notification email looked like this:

If it was clearly shipped with Fedex. The email goes on to specifically state that the carrier of my package is USPS. I'd like to warn others that this is not necessarily the case. I don't know if this is a common issue, but it's definitely one that should be resolved. If I hadn't have accidentally stumbled on this I wouldn't have known and could have potentially lost the package just by virtue of having no idea where it was or when it was coming.

It may be shipped with FedEx SmartPost, where FedEx is handling most of the transit and final delivery is carried out by the USPS.

I still don't understand why they wouldn't have sent me to the Fedex tracking info though? It just seems very very odd for them to point me to USPS over and over again when the tracking info leads to a completely different website and carrier. At the very least I'd have liked knowing this was how it was going to be shipped, since this is going to take a while and it seems like its going to be a long time if they do end up handing it off to USPS, that means the tracking number would have been broken up until the day it was out for delivery, which is estimated to be a week from now. The tracking info is pretty much useless at that point.

most likely answer.

Fedex tracking will eventually rollover into USPS tracking if this is indeed how it goes.

Newegg does the same thing . If an item is free or low - cost shipping it travels via Fed-Ex until it is handed off to the local USPS distribution center .

Got the same thing here with the tracking numbers. Like I'm glad to have figured it out, but if someone isn't tech savy (or didn't save previous order confirmations with tracking numbers to make a connection), they would be lost.

I just made an order from the egg after I posted . Fed -Ex Smart post & USPS . Only thing is if it went directly to USPS it would be faster . Fed-Ex is saying a week !

It could be a glitch. A recent package for a pre-order shipped FedEx SmartPost and it came up USPS in the email and from the clickable tracking link. The difference between this and previous orders that shipped SmartPost were the tracking numbers. Past orders that said FedEx for the carrier started with a "6," while all USPS tracking numbers start with "9." I can't guess how CR's shipping emails are generated, but maybe it auto-recognizes the USPS tracking numbers and automatically creates the clickable link to USPS.

But I certainly agree with saSOOke's concern, since USPS tracking doesn't update until the package information is transmitted to them and that doesn't happen until FedEx is actually in the process of moving the package into the USPS system. Example: last CR package shipped via FedEx SmartPost on 10/30. USPS tracking did not start until 11/5.

Thank you so much for this... After a long wait they finally shipped my Utena figure last week, but the tracking number still wasn't working on USPS site. I just tracked it on FedEx.com and there it was! I was getting worried they hadn't actually shipped my package. Now I know it's on its way and will arrive day after tomorrow.
