Ok, kids gather around the bonfire it's time for me to tell you a short story.

T he story begins with me talking to a friend on Skype regarding a anime that I've watched called Chaika on Crunchyroll. So then I tell him that he can watch this wonderful anime on CR... Then I get the reply it's not free in witch I answered you can watch a episode one week later for free... And then I get the answer "pirate of nothing" and answers like that pisses me the hell off since things like this will one day be the demise of the industry.

Anyhow, what do you think about people like that?

I really don't like people like that. I just never got how pirating was better than watching the same thing legally. It's always been a dumb concept to me.

There's always been dumb people within the anime community. As for pirating, I just discovered 90% of shows worth watching are streamed legally, so one must wonder why people would want to pirate except for sub preferences. Some people want the honorifics included in the subs or some other bullcrap. Then there's the whole edginess factor to it. Breaking rules and killing hookers is cool, following the rule and watching anime and the commercials are not. People our age tend to act in inane ways and hold asinine opinions, so that's not surprise.

I did a little bit of fansubbing and scanlation work back in the day... (very, very little).

Quite frankly, the practice as a whole started out as "hey. This stuff is cool. We can't get this in the US". Fansubs were the only way to get stuff.

Then the internets.

Then the greed from the companies making it . (seriously $25 for TWO EPISODES of gantz. Not cool. Not really hot on paying $59 for Time of Eve in the other thread either. $59 is a lot of green to own a copy of something that I think originally started on the internets for free, but kinda needed some fansubbing for overseas markets)

Then came streaming and simulcasts because companies were hurting because of "piracy" and they couldn't compete with fansub's turnaround speed. (seriously. we took a week to sub out a RAW and we were just starting basically. Some fansub groups could do it in nearly 24 hours of the RAW release)...

Then came the companies using fansubs for streaming and simulcasts. (Srsly. Some of the stuff I saw on hulu still has all the tell tale signs of fansubbing. Including the "do not steal. if you paid for this you were ripped off" blah blah blah) Which means that the legit companies were stealing the illegal stuff to use it as legit stuff to combat the very stuff they used...

So basically it's about money. And somewhere along the chain line, someone's being greedy, depending on who's whining the most.

I don't care either way as they're not just going to stop if the people who watch anime legally say "Hey, that's not right". They're not stupid for wanting to watch anime illegally, they're lazy, impatient, etc.

There's a number of reasons why they wouldn't/don't watch anime legally, but I wouldn't call them stupid if they are (watching anime illegally). That's just rude. They could be smarter than us, you never know.

I always try to advertise Crunchyroll to people I know as well if they like anime. They always say "Well, this site has all those shows you mentioned plus more and it is free without ads."

I honestly don't care about the methods people use to watch anime.

That is just my 2 cents.

Hooray for story time, anyway back to the subject at hand. I personally hate it when people are like that, pirating is stealing and can damage the industry, and without the industry we couldn't get our beloved animes.

Chances are though we aren't going to get people to stop, the best thing to do would probably to refer people to legal sites before they even know of the illegal ones. That way they can build up a moral compass, or at least realize the effects of pirating.

Also you gotta love the timed simulcast release schedule.

On the subject of overpriced Discs(bluray or otherwise). That is a pretty unfair practice too. Because honestly I don't pirate, but I'm also not gonna pay $50 for 4 episodes of anime. This sort of practice makes it so that I miss out some pretty good anime that is no longer streaming and whatnot.

There are stupid people everywhere, however I get extremely irritated when people pirate when they are given an easy to access alternative that supports the industry.

While i pirate shows from Funi because i cant view them in my country, i often buy the blu-rays afterwards. I never pirate shows i can legally pay for to watch.

I am tired of people killing the anime industry and feeling justified in doing it.

I think pirating should only be used in situations you cannot legally watch the show. Because lets face it, not every show is licensed for all regions. My region (Caribbean) suffering terribly from that fact.

When Crunchyroll sets the standard at $7 for anime...

It's difficult to pay $80 for a 12-episode season just because the show's NOT on Chrunchyroll. That's when I find a free website or torrent. (so this pretty much goes for most dubbed content too since there's not much here and I really enjoy my dubs. i've only known of 1 popular dub service comparable to Crunchyroll, and i tried it, but it only offered a small catalog of shows and episodes)

I'd pay maybe $20 monthly (anime-only) for Crunchyroll if I understood Japanese (i can only read subtitles sometimes, but I can spend ALL DAY listening to english TV while I multitask)

I pay 14.99 for MMO's.... so that's my maximum for Crunchyroll too.

Go ahead, guys, double the price.

Seriously, $7 for their entire catalog is a steal.

I feel better paying Crunchyroll than I do with Hulu and Netflix

Pirating is for scrubs. If you love anime, support the industry at least and give your two cents
